NFL REALIGNMENT

By:- Gary Norris Gray-BASN-Staff Reporter

OAKLAND, CA.-Commissioner Roger Goodell needs to transplant the National Football League conferences. The league has not realigned since 2002, when the league eliminated the Central Divisions and created the North and South Divisions. The divisional changes may have been well intended but not implemented correctly.

There are currently five divisions that are geographically incorrect. The NFL stated that the league wanted to cut down on travel, gas, and time. Is the league being honest?

This will not happen because of the veto power of two powerful team owners. The power brokers to realignment are The Dallas Cowboys (Jerry Jones) and the Miami Dolphins (Wayne Huizenka-1990-2008), who do not want to give up their historical divisional rivals. Both teams have blocked moves before and will do it again if it does not benefit them. It is time to get it right before the NFL expands.

The realignment of the six current divisions could be established by realigning teams in their proper geographical regions. The New England (CHEATERS) Patriots have won the AFC EAST Division 12 of 14 years. WHY? Because no team in that division has challenged the red, white, and blue clad Pats. The Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills, and New York Jets are no match for Belichick’s coaching crew in Foxboro, Mass. The infusion of the Baltimore Ravens into the AFC East Division would create spark and competition for the New England Patriots. The Pats would no longer get a pass, an automatic title.

The Baltimore Ravens and owner Art Modell are being punished for moving the team from Cleveland to Maryland in 1996. The league moved Baltimore in the AFC NORTH after two years in the old AFC Central and became the most traveled team in that division.

The League should explain why the Indianapolis Colts are in the AFC SOUTH Division? The Colts are not in a southern state even though some Republican lawmakers might think so and the state of Indiana has southern leanings. The Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Tennessee Titans are current members of this weak division. The Colts are nowhere near that geographical southern region. This could be called nick-picking but the NFL needs to get this future realignment correct.

While the Miami Dolphins are in the AFC East Division with the New York Jets, Buffalo Bills, and the New England Patriots. The Dolphins are over one thousand miles south of their competitors. For the Bills, Patriots, and Jets it’s a summer vacation in the middle of winter going to Miami Beach.

The Miami Dolphins resist this move because of the family ties to New York and Massachusetts. The growing number of (retired seniors) snow birds moving from north to south. Plus the AFC SOUTH Division is not a very sexy or a winning division.

Anybody with common sense would put the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC North Division, the Miami Dolphins in the AFC South and the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC East. But what do I know after fifty years of watching the National Football League?

Next question, why are the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC NORTH with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Cincinnati Bengals, and Cleveland Browns? These three teams are just a train ride from each other. This is the AFL version of the Black and Blue Division (old NFC central). The Ravens are the odd man out on the east coast. The Baltimore Ravens should be in the AFC East with the Jets, Pats, and Bills. Just like their capitol expressway NFC EAST brethren, The Washington Football Club.

In the National Football Conference The Dallas Cowboys do not belong in the NFC EAST, and The St. Louis Rams do not belong in the NFC WEST. The Cowboys should move to the NFC SOUTH and the Rams should move to NFC East.

Then there is the confusion and constant transferring of the Seattle Seahawks to different divisions. The NFL needs to stabilize this franchise keeping them in one conference and one league.

Conversations about the Seattle Seahawks returning to the American Football Conference (AFC) West Division started once more. This will be the third time the Seattle franchise moves across conferences. The Seahawks are NFL’s step child getting pushed around as the owners place them wherever it’s convenient at the time.

The West coast teams like the Oakland Raiders, San Diego Chargers, Seattle Seahawks, and San Francisco 49ers are at a huge disadvantage because they travel across three different time zones.

Their games start at one o’clock eastern time and it is ten o’clock in the morning by their biological clock. The NFL can be mean scheduling a west coast team with back to back east coast games. This can be seen as cruel and unusual punishment.

Last year the Seattle Seahawks, Oakland Raiders, and the San Francisco 49ers logged the most air miles. The Seahawks fared better winning most of their games while the Raiders finally won a game on the Eastern Time zone in Cleveland in 2015. The 49ers split their games.

What’s going to happen when the NFL expands overseas to Europe?

The last issue on the realignment agenda is the placement of a team in the Los Angeles area.

The owners are currently debating which team or teams will be rewarded the Los Angeles goldmine. So far the St Louis Rams, San Diego Changers, and Oakland Raiders are all in the Hollywood Squares sweepstakes. The Raiders, Chargers, and Rams all have been in the City of Angels.

The Chargers started their AFL journey in Los Angeles in 1960 winning the first AFL western division crown. The Chargers packed their bags for San Diego the very next year. The Rams moved from the mid-west town of St. Louis to La-La Land in 1946, moving to Anaheim in 1980-94. In 1995 the vagabonds moved back to St. Louis. The Rams could return to Los Angeles in 2017.

The Raiders moved to Los Angeles with disgruntled owner Al Davis in 1982 winning the Super Bowl. The Black and Silver returned to Oakland in 1994 after a protracted legal battle. Al Davis, the Raiders, and the city of Los Angeles could not secure a stadium in Carson, California. Here we go again!!!! So the merry-go-round will continue with these three teams until the spring of 2017.

The NFL still envisions a team in Los Angeles. This would fill that 20 year vacant spot in the NFC West. This would be established with either an expansion team or the return of the Rams, Raiders, or Chargers.

Realignment has been done over and over and over again in the 1960’s 70’s 80’s and 90’s with the Baltimore Ravens, Indianapolis Colts, Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, New Orleans Saints, St. Louis Rams, Arizona Cardinals, Seattle Seahawks, Atlanta Falcons and Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans. The process will be repeated with the addition of a Los Angeles team.

The following three divisions do not need change

 NFC SOUTH

Atlanta Falcons

New Orleans Saints

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Carolina Panthers

 NFC NORTH

Detroit Lions

Minnesota Vikings

Chicago Bears

Green Bay Packers

 AFC WEST

Oakland Raiders
