Billy Donovan & The OKC Thunder Beat Spurs In Season Opener

Updated: October 29, 2015

The Oklahoma City Thunder came into the season opener with anxiousness that only a kid waiting for Christmas would get. The Thunder wanted to prove that they are a legit contender and that they can hang with any team. The first task of the season was going up against the San Antonio Spurs at home. This was Kevin Durants first regular season game since February and he was able to put the doubters in their place. KDs first matchup of the season came against the defensive player of the year Kawhi Leonard and he gave KD all he can handle. Leonard and Durant went back and forth all night going head to head in a huge primetime game. Kevin finished with 22 points and Kawhi Leonard had a career high of 32 points. Even though the Thunder beat the Spurs they still can take some positives out of this loss. The first thing they can take from this is that Kawhi Leonard has come back better and stronger offensively and defensively which is scary for the Western Conference. The second thing that they can take away from this game is the fact that LaMarcus Aldridge looked very comfortable in the Spurs offense and had a lot of touches in the game. The third and last thing would be the fact that Duncan,Parker, and Ginobili are still playing at a high level even with minutes being decreased some.

The Thunder looked very good offensively but they still need to work on the interior defense. The Thunder have the fire power to exceed the defense in the beginning of the season but when the playoffs come it will be a different story. Russell Westbrook was on fire late in the game and finished with 33 points and made some great defensive stops down the stretch but have to keep it going. Westbrook fed off the crowds energy and was able to propel his team to a win. Westbrook is growing into a great leader day by day and doesn’t get credit because of his reaction to media. KD and Westbrook both combined for 55 points and were willing to will the team to victory. The role players came up big time for them as Kanter had 15 points and 16 rebounds in 24 minutes. Kanter is just missing the defense as Aldridge was having his way in the paint against him. If Kanter improves that then he would be worth every penny and can be the force the Thunder expected him to be when signing him for the max. The other role player that had a big night was Dion Waiters  he hit some clutch jumpers near the end of the game to give the Thunder that extra push they needed to win this game.

The Thunder will host the Orlando Magic on Friday as they try to go 2-0 in this young season. It will be a good matchup with Harris vs Durant in the sunshine state.
