Last year African American quarterbacks reached for the stars with success. One weekend on the grid-iron ten Black quarterbacks started and garnered a 7-1 record with two injuries and two no decisions in week number seven. That is history but the American Sports media did not even notice.

As we begin the 2014 season we have one additional African American Head Coach with the re-hiring of Lovie Smith in Tampa Bay from the Chicago Bears and Jim Caldwell in Detroit from the Indianapolis Colts. The Tony Dungy Tree and the Tampa Two Defense is alive and well in 2014.

Lovie Smith and Jim Caldwell led their previous respective teams to Super Bowl appearances.

Remember there are 30 teams in the league and most teams carry three or more quarterbacks on their squads. That is a total of over 90 quarterbacks. The question should be asked why only six quarterbacks of color are starting in the National Football League.

There are currently 20 Black quarterbacks on the 2014 rosters including three free agents, an increase of six from 2013.

St. Louis Rams v Seattle SeahawksAt the 75 man cut list Thad Lewis of the Buffalo Bills and James Franklin of the Detroit Lions did not make their squads.

* Black Quarterbacks- 6*

*1) Russell Wilson- Seattle Seahawks- * Everybody is still asking can General Wilson repeat as Super Bowl Champions. The last repeat champions are the New England Patriots and that was ten years ago. Seattle is in the toughest conference (NFC-WEST) so Russell Wilson has his work cut out for him.. Why do you think we keep calling him, The General.

The football version of the Jackson Five are alive and well in the Great Northwest.

*2) Cam Newton- Carolina Panthers-* Newton did not take a snap in pre-season due to foot-ankle surgery at the end of last season. This pre-season Newton had a hairline fracture that has slowed him down.

*3) Colin Kaepernick-San Francisco 49ers-* First unit had very tough time scoring in pre-season. Niners are just going to tread water until their starting defensive linemen Aldon Smith and NaVarro Bowmen return to the lineup in mid-season. Glen Dorsey could miss entire season while Ian Williams is working his way back into lineup with broken ankle

*4) Geno Smith- New York Jets- * The battle for the number one quarterback spot was inspirational because veteran Michael Vick made rookie quarterback Geno Smith a better player this spring.

*5) E.J. Manuel-Buffalo Bills- *

*6) Robert Griffin III- The Washington Football Club-* Mr. Griffin the Third, looked more mobile and had the Washington offense in gear this sprinNewton_Riverag training. The coaching problems might be solved with the departure of the Shannahan’s from FedEx Field. RG3 also has to implement a new offensive system which takes time.

PLEASE DO NOT USE FEDEX until this company stops supporting Dan Snyder and the Washington team name.

Black Head Coaches- 4

Ron Rivera- Carolina Panthers-Latin Head Coach- Rivera and the power blue Cats had to use their backup quarterback this spring training and the Black and Blue did not look good on offense.

Marvin Lewis – Cincinnati Bengals-It’s do or die for the Halloween Cats. Lewis and the Bengals have to move into the 2nd round of the playoffs this year.
Mike Tomlin- Pittsburgh Steelers- could be on the Hot Seat this year if Big Ben and the Steelers do not produce a winning product in the Steel City.
Jim Caldwell- Detroit Lions- Never should have been fired from the Indianapolis Colts three years ago, after 14-2 season. Caldwell gets another chance with Tampa Two defense which should improve the Silver and Blue. Mr. Caldwell coached the wide receivers of the 1980 NCAA Division 1-AA National Football Champion Southern Illinois University Salukis.

Lovie Smith- Tampa Bay Buccaneers- The Tampa Two defense returns to the Bay with Smith leading the way.
Black General Managers-6

img21862328Detroit Lion Martin Mayhew- This GM could be on the hot seat if the Lions do not play well in the playoffs. Quarterback Matthew Stafford has to improve his leadership skills. The Lions don’t trust Stafford and they should with weapons like wide receivers Golden Tate and Calvin Johnson.
Baltimore Raven Ozzie Newsome- If the Purple pattern continues this will be a good year for the Bird fans. Quarterback Joe Flacco took the money and ran. This hurt Baltimore because they could not sign free agents last year. NOBODY TALKS ABOUT THAT!!!!
Oakland Raider Reggie McKenzie- do not know which direction the Silver and Black are headed but can’t be too far with Matt Schuab at the starting quarterback position. Give rookie quarterback Derrick Carr a shot and move on to the future. In each preseason game quarterback Matt McGloin moved the team down the field. McGloin knows the offence Schuab does not.
Raider defense has to improve to move away from the twelve straight years of not achieving a winning record. Head Coach Dennis Allen is still a work in progress. RAIDER NATION stay tune.
The New York Football Giant Jerry Reese- The Football Giants installed a new offense for Eli Manning and BIG BLUE who led the league in INT’S the past two years. Can’t hurt to change styles. Offensive line has to block for Eli and the defense has to stop somebody.
Houston Texan-Rick Smith-
Buffalo Bills-Doug Whaley-
Black Ownership -0- This is a Black Eye in the NFL pun intended.
Black ownership should be addressed by The National Football League.
