Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire! The Lady Pirates of Hampton Deserve Better

The Hampton Lady Pirate basketball team won their 4th (MEAC)
Mid-Eastern Athletic Championship. The Pirates won 19 straight games
at the end of the season. Hampton won 28 games this year en route to
their convincing 4th championship in a row.

The Women’s NCAA Division One bracket came out at 4 pm Monday
afternoon and the MEAC Champion Hampton Lady Pirates got a 15th seed
playing against number 2nd seeded Duke Lady Blue Devils.

The Lady Pirates did everything the NCAA asked them to do at the
beginning of the season. The NCAA asked the Lady Pirates to play 30
games… they did that winning 28-5.

The NCAA asked them to play a tough schedule outside of their
conference. They did that by playing Southern Mississippi, Mississippi
State, Louisiana State, South Carolina, DePaul, South Carolina State,
and Florida Gulf Coast.

The NCAA asked them to beat ranked teams. They did that by defeating
The Lady Golden Eagles of Southern Miss., the Lady Bulldogs of
Mississippi State, and the Lady Tigers of LSU.

The NCAA asked them to win the MEAC regular season title and the MEAC
Tournament, The Lady Pirates did that TOO.

The Lady Pirates have the MEAC coach of the year with David Six. They
also have the defensive player of the year in Alyssa Bennett and
Keiara Avant the outstanding player of 2013.
For all of these wonderful achievements they get smacked in the face
with a 15th seed on Monday afternoon.

It is time for the four HBCU conferences to pull away from NCAA and
create their own athletic league association. This year’s event proves
they are not interested in helping Black colleges and universities. I
have been saying this for the past three years and now it’s time for
the (SIAC) Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, (SWAC) the
Southwest Athletic Conference, (MEAC) the Mid-Eastern Athletic
Conference, and (CIAA)-the Central Intercollegiate Athletic
Association to take action.

As my friend Cowboy Reggie Howell from WCLM 1450 Richmond, Virginia
stated many times “Follow the Money” and this cannot be any clearer.
The NCAA should be ashamed of itself.
