Playing The Same Ol’ Song

CONNECTICUT (BASN) — The preseason polls are out.

Sure the game is not played in the polls, but given the lack of depth in the women’s game there are probably six teams at most capable of winning a National Championship.

UConn is once again the overwhelming favorite because they have Maya Moore and no one else does. That was a refrain used by coach Geno Auriemma when he had Diana Taurasi on the team.

Even Auriemma will tell you that Moore is not Taurasi, at least not yet.

UConn has a glaring lack of depth underneath and much youth on the team. They still have the best player and the best coach and that goes far in the women’s game.

Baylor is a power again with Brittney Griner back at center.

They open the season at UConn in what should be an interesting game and probably a game that Baylor could win if played in Waco. It is probably a game that the Lady Bears will win when played in Waco next year.

Duke has the best recruiting class coming in and will be a power. Tennessee has numbers and a great coach. Xavier returns much of its near Final Four team from last year. Ohio State will be strong under head coach Jim Foster.

What is glaring in the preseason polls is how teams like Maryland, Texas, Georgia, Auburn, Florida, Vanderbilt and Rutgers have fallen.

Probably no team has fallen to the depths of Rutgers. They are even an afterthought in the Big East with teams like St.

John’s, Georgetown, Louisville, Syracuse, and West Virginia racing past them.

Why is the question? The easiest answer is the numbers.

They have eight scholarship players on the roster. Tough to believe. They play a very difficult schedule and as always will lose plenty before January 1. Games against California, Stanford and Tennessee could be ugly.

All are on the road. Lastly, many kids no longer want to play the Rutgers system which has historically emphasized defense over offense with games played in the 50’s.

Hall of Fame coach C. Vivian Stringer has vowed to emphasize offense this season. She has said that before.Look for the Scarlet Knights to struggle to make the NCAA’s once again and suffer a first round loss if they do make it.

Many Rutgers fans are in denial and talk about the string of Sweet 16’s that Stringer once strung together. Those days are over perhaps for a long time in Piscataway.
