The senior quarterback will miss two to four weeks of practice after his right foot got caught in a mower Wednesday while he cut the grass at his off-campus residence.
A school official said teammate Brian Quick drove Edwards to the hospital, where he was treated and released.
Coach Jerry Moore said Thursday that Edwards should be recovered in time for Appalachian State's season-opener Sept. 5 at East Carolina.
The slight, shifty 6-foot Edwards burst onto the national scene in 2007 when he led the Mountaineers to a shocking upset of Michigan. He has led ASU to two Football Championship Series titles (formerly Division I-AA) in three years
Last year, he won the Walter Payton Award, given to the top player in the lower-tier Football Championship Subdivision. During the season, Edwards was 196-of-306 passing for 2,902 yards and threw 30 touchdowns, and rushed for 941 yards and 11 touchdowns.
