11 juniors will return next season off of the Class 4A championship squad, coached by second-year veteran Greg Wise. Yates was determined to win the first high school state boy's basketball championship since integration in Texas in 1967.

Yates claimed their first University Interscholastic League championship in school history. It's their sixth state title overall and first since 1949 when they were in the Prairie View Interscholastic League.

According to the Montana High School Association, dunking is not allowed in pregame warmups in tournament play. If a backboard is damaged by a pregame dunk, the offending school must forfeit. The rule was put in 10 years ago.

It took 26 years, but the duo of Brandon Peters and Joseph Young scored 16 points each to lead the Yates Lions to a 78-57 victory over the Jones Falcons in the Region III, Class 4A championship game held at the Merrell Center in Katy.

Mansfield Summit used a variety of defensive schemes to keep Nimitz off balance from start to finish. 6-foot-8 senior Brittney Griner, the No. 1 player in the country, hit 10-of-11 from the field, but her teammates were 7-of-26.
