Four African Americans, including head coach, Robert Prunty of Hargrave Military Academy (Chatham, Va.), will coach the East Team, and one will join the West’s coaching staff.
This classic East vs. West match-up features the nation’s top 84 high school football players and will be televised live January 5 on NBC at 12 noon (CST) at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.
The East Coaching Staff will try to tie-up the 4-3 series, which the West currently leads. Coach Craig Jefferies of Dunbar High School (Washington, D.C.) said, “We feel very confident that under Prunty’s leadership we’ll be able to get our guys ready for one of the biggest games of their high school careers."
Rich McGuinness, President of SportsLink, owner and producer of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, noted “The coaches understand the importance of inspiring their players to be more than just great athletes."
"The techniques, the messages and the model that they convey, resembles the same character building values that the U.S. Army embodies. We are honored to have them join the 2008 U.S. Army All-American Bowl Coaching Staff.”
Among the other African American coaches chosen for the 2008 U.S. Army All-American Bowl are Troy Davis of Hargrave Military Academy; Terry Smith of Gateway High School (Monroeville, Pa.); and Tony Davis of Tacoma High School (Maple Valley, Wa.).
Herman Boone and Bill Yoast, the legendary Virginia high school football coaches from T.C. Williams High School, who were immortalized in the Disney feature film Remember the Titans, will serve as honorary coaches for the East and West teams. At the conclusion of this year’s U.S. Army All-American Bowl, the winning team will be presented with the Herman Boone Trophy.
Since its inception, the U.S. Army All-American Bowl has been considered the nation’s premier All-American game by high school football players, coaches, and fans from across the country, as it’s the preeminent launching pad for America’s future college and NFL stars.
Heisman Trophy Winner Reggie Bush, Vince Young, Adrian Peterson, and Brady Quinn all made their national debuts as U.S. Army All-Americans. Last year the U.S. Army All-American Bowl set its own attendance record, as 35,151 fans attended the game at the Alamodome.
The U.S. Army All-American Bowl is owned by SportsLink, a New Jersey-based sports marketing and event management company.
