Former Jackson State standout qualifies for LPGA Tour

The 24-year-old made history just a week after Joseph Bramlett became the first African-American man in 25 years to qualify for the PGA Tour through Q-school.
Now Averyhardt is set to become the first African-American LPGA member since LaRee Sugg in 2001. Averyhardt turned professional in 2009 and has been playing on the Duramed FUTURES Tour since January 2010.
The Tour is known as "the Road to the LPGA" and since 1999, it has been designated as the LPGA's developmental tour. The Flint, Michigan native picked up her first professional victory last July when she won the SunCoast Ladies Series at Stoneybrook West Golf Club.
She also qualified for the U.S. Women's Open in July 2010 earning her entrance on May 19 in Ormond Beach, Florida. Averyhardt becomes the fourth African-American woman in the 60-year history of the LPGA to have status.
While at Jackson State Averyhardt was a four-time Southwestern Athletic Conference champion (2004-2008). She was also a four-time SWAC Women's Golf Championships individual medalist, played in four NCAA Regionals, and recorded nine wins in collegiate
"Shasta is one of the most accomplished women golfers we have had at Jackson State," said JSU head golf coach Eddie Payton. "She has all the tools needed to be successful on the Ladies Tour."
