NORTH CAROLINA (BASN) --Week 1 is in the books and we saw some amazing football in both the colleges and the NFL. Let’s take a look at some of the teams and put them in the three categories called “The Good, Bad and Ugly”.

The Good:

Steelers - In a game everyone expected to be physical, close and would come down to the final possession of the game, Pittsburgh used a wide open attack to move the ball down the field in overtime and won the game on a Jeff Reed field goal 13-10. Neither team could run the ball and generate many points, but like last season, the defending Super Bowl Champs did enough on offense and scored enough points to avenge last seasons lost to the Titans. The win proved costly to the Steelers as star safety Troy Polamalu injured his MCL and could miss up to 6 weeks.  Both these teams proved that they are solid on defense and well coached and could see each other down the line in the playoffs.

Eagles-They are fast, athletic and talented. Just ask the Panthers. After a slow start against the Panthers in Charlotte, Philly woke up and turned up their play in all 3 phases of the game and easily defeated the Panthers 38-10. The Eagles forced 7 turnovers and the offense came up with big plays to go from a 7-0 deficit to and easy 28-point victory. Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb played well, but left the game at one point due to a rib injury.

Saints-Drew Brees continues to put up fantasy league numbers for New Orleans. Brees went 26 of 34 for 358 yards and 6 touchdowns as the Saints destroyed the Lions 45-27 extending Detroit's regular season losing streak to 17 straight dating back to their winless season last year.

Falcons-Atlanta forced 4 turnovers and used a balanced attack on offense to beat the Dolphins easily 19-7. The four turnovers for Miami were uncharacteristic including an interception thrown by Chad Pennington, who threw for only 176 yards.

Jets-No Brett Favre, no problem. Matt Sanchez had a solid game as quarterback for the Jets in his first game throwing  for 272 yards and a touchdown in New York's big road victory at Houston 24-7. The Jets defense also came up big forcing two turnovers and holding the Texans to only 38 yards on the ground.

Cowboys-Tony Romo continues to play well in September with big numbers in Dallas' win at Tampa Bay 34-21. Romo threw for 353 yards and three touchdowns including two big passes to Patrick Crayton (80 yards) and Roy Williams(66 yards).

The Bad:

Lions-Detroit managed only 14 first downs had 3 turnovers and 8 penalties for 80 yards in their loss to the Saints 45-27 and those were there good stats. The defense was horrible allowing over 500 yards of offense to New Orleans including six touchdown passes for Drew Brees. Matthew Stafford played okay, throwing for 200 yards but had three interceptions. Look for the Lions to continue their regular season winless streak for a few more weeks before they get a victory (If they get one).

Bucs-Tampa Bay basically lost this game to the Cowboys because the Cowboys made big plays on offense and the Bucs didn’t. They had over 450 yards of total offense, 73 offensive plays, no turnovers and won the time of possession battle yet they lost 34-21. The Bucs have a poor defense, including holes in their secondary and linebacking corps and Dallas exploited it all day in the passing game.

Jaguars-Only 12 first downs and 228 yards of total offense is not enough to get a win at Indianapolis even though Jacksonville had a chance to do so in losing to the Colts 14-12. I guess you can say the Jaguars had balance on offense with 114 yards rushing and passing but 12 points is not enough to beat Peyton Manning and the Colts, who get Jim Caldwell his first career win in the NFL. Meanwhile expect the “Del Rio must go" chatter to begin in Jacksonville even after one loss this season.

Bears-Four picks by the anointed franchise quarterback Jay Cutler is not going to lead Chicago to a division title or a Super Bowl berth. Cutler looked scared, confused and overwhelmed by the new look defensive scheme of the Packers and seemed intimidated by the “Cheeseheads” in the seats who were loving his meltdown seen by millions on Sunday. All the talk about his great arm and how far he can throw the ball is a wash when he uses that great arm and throws it deep to the wrong team! I feel bad for Lovie Smith because a few more games like that and he will be watching more interceptions by Cutler from his house rather than the sidelines .

Chiefs-We thought K.C. would struggle defensively, but they showed their offensive woes too in their 38-24 loss. The offense managed only 11 first downs, 188 total yards and had the ball for only 20 minutes on offense. The defense was pretty pathetic too allowing over 500 yards and allowed the Ravens to keep the ball for nearly 40 minutes in the game. It will be a long season for the Chiefs even when Matt Cassel comes back as the starting quarterback.

Bills-Buffalo had New England on the ropes and left them off the hook, allowing the Patriots to score two touchdowns in the last three minutes of the game which is inexcusable. Dick Jauron and his coaching staff are unsure of their play calling, Trent Edwards is still not getting it done at quarterback and their defense still gives up too many big plays. As long as Jauron is the coach of this team, Bill fans can continue to watch the playoff games on television.

The Ugly:

Texans-Two words: Gary Kubiak. Enough said.

Panthers-Four words: Jake Delhomme/John Fox. Enough said.

Dolphins-Two words: Four turnovers. Enough said.

Browns -Four words: Brady Quinn/Eric Mangini. Enough said.

Bengals-Four words: Poor offense/horrible defense. Enough said.

Rams -What can you say about the Rams: THEY SUCK! PERIOD!

DIVISION 1 HBCU PLAYER OF THE WEEK:

WR Thomas Harris, Alabama  A&M: Harris caught 10 passes for a career high 224 yards and two touchdowns in the Bulldogs' 31-24 win over Hampton.

DIVISION II HBCU PLAYER OF THE WEEK:

QB Ryan Carter, Johnson C. Smith: Carter racked up 327 yards of total offense (200 passing, 127 rushing). He also threw for two touchdowns and rushed for one in their 27-14 win over Edward Waters.
