The Winnipeg Blue Bombers veteran slotback caught a 92-yard pass at 9:02 in the second quarter to boost his career total to 14,983, breaking the mark of 14,891 yards previously held by former Calgary Stampeders star Allen Pitts. Stegall took a pass from Kevin Glenn over the middle and split the Argos defence to go the distance for a touchdown -- his second of the game. It put the Bombers ahead 28-3. Stegall's accomplishment was then announced over the public address system at Rogers Centre, illiciting a nice round of applause from fans in attendance. However, there was no on-field ceremony and play continued on with the Bombers booting the convert at 9:19 of the second. Stegall tied Pitts' mark with a 16-yard touchdown catch at 6:19 of the quarter, his first catch of the game, to put Winnipeg ahead 21-3. The 14-year CFL veteran is already the CFL's all-time leader in touchdowns (146) and receiving TDs (143). The 38-year-old broke Pitts' record in his 174th career game, two less than the former Stampeder. Stegall also holds the league mark for most touchdowns and TD catches in a season (23, in 2002) and has amassed nine straight 1,000-yard seasons. But that streak is in serious jeopardy as Stegall, who missed the first five games of the '08 season while recovering from off-season knee surgery, has just 13 catches for 180 yards with no touchdowns. © Copyright 2005 by BlackAthlete Sports Network |
