NEW HAVEN (BASN) — Over the last 13 Sundays, BASN has taken an in-depth look at the signature seasons of Hall of Fame running backs Jim Brown (1963) and O.J. Simpson (1973).

If you’re looking a lot of off the field stuff with a National Inquirer or TMZ Sports style, you’d probably better step off now. This weekly essay is all about football and nothing else.

In last week’s action, both the Browns and Bills won to stay in their respective playoff faces. Behind O.J.’s 137 rushing yards, Buffalo defeated Atlanta 17-6. As for Cleveland, they beat St. Louis 24-10 behind 179 yards and two TD’s from Brown.

We move on to Week 13, with only a game remaining after this Sunday.

WEEK 13 1963: Cleveland falls to Detroit 38-10

Cleveland’s chances to win the Eastern Conference were dashed as the Lions (5-7-1) upset the Browns at Tiger Stadium. Detroit’s defense not only put the clamps on Brown (61 yards on 13 carries), they also forced five Cleveland turnovers including three interceptions. Leading from start to finish, the Lions jumped out to a 14-0 lead keyed by a 75-yard scoring pass from Earl Morrall (13-of-25, 271 yards) to Terry Barr. The Browns (9-4) would bounce back and cut the lead to 14-10 at the half. But Morrall’s second scoring pass of the game — a 29-yarder to Gail Cogdill — and a fumble recovery in the end zone by Darris McCord keyed a 17-point third quarter by Detroit that put the game out of reach.

WEEK 13 1973: Buffalo defeats New England 37-13

After New England (5-8) posted a first-quarter field goal from Jeff White, rookie Wallace Francis returned the kickoff 90 yards to give the Bills a lead they would not relinquish. It was Wallace’s second kickoff TD of the season. In Week One, O.J. burned the Pats for a then-NFL record 250 yards. This Sunday, Simpson posted 219 yards on 22 carries including a 6-yard touchdown that put the Bills (8-5) ahead 14–3 in the second quarter. Veteran wide receiver Bob Chandler caught two touchdown passes from Joe Ferguson and John Leypoldt added three field goals. The effort earned Simpson his third NFL Offensive Player of the Week award.
