Molina and Andrade wins
This past Saturday John Molina discovered the value of the jab as he used it effectively against the tough Ruslan Provodnikov as he captured a unanimous decision. This was an action fight as both fighters combined for almost 2000 hits with Molina throwing 1,110 of them, 60% of those punches jabs. Molina used the jab to establish the real estate but he showed his usual penchant for going toe to toe with Provodnikov. Molina’s jab proved decisive as it allowed him the opportunity to move after those frequent toe to toe encounters. This was a case of Molina outworking Provodnikov, who admitted as much after the fight when he told Showtime Jim Gray “Today the decision was the right one. Molina won the fight – he was better tonight. Everything was scored the way it should have been.”
Demetrius Andrade came back with a statement fight as he stopped Willie Nelson, a top ten 154 pound fighter. Andrade dominated the fight with a knock down in the first round and treated Nelson as his personal punching bag while landing almost 60% of his power punches. A victory would put Andrade close to a championship bout against one of the Charlo’s twins. A former champion, Andrade did not lose his title in the ring and the undefeated Andrade needed not just a win but something impressive to get back in title contention.
Andrade delivered as he simply dominated Nelson who never had answers for Andrade skills and speed as Andrade delivered sharp combinations from different angle. Nelson used high defense to keep Andrade off him but it didn’t work.
Andrade pitched a shutout but more impressive he knocked Nelson down in the 11th before ending the bout when he sent Nelson down two more times in the twelfth. The referee stopped the fight after the second knockdown.
Vasyl Lomachenko used his superior skills to dominate Roman “Rocky” Martinez as he not only outbox Martinez but he also stopped WBO super featherweight champion as he now grabbed two titles in only seven professional fight. Lomachenko boxed his way around the ring as he kept Martinez off balance and in the fifth round, a Lomachenko right hook sent Martinez down for the count.
So we saw Molina win a big bout against Provodnikov and while this won’t enhance his championship hopes; it does allow him to be able to get other big fights due to his exciting go for broke style.
Andrade sent a message to other junior Middleweights that he is ready to challenge for title and Lomachenko is showing that he is a unique fighter, a championship fighter from the beginning of his career.
