NEW YORK CITY (BASN): There are great players in this year’s US Open, starting Monday. Names like Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Maria Sharapova and Ana Ivanovic.
But this year’s Open is all about one player. A player who had her own press conference, with a throng of media a full 2 days before the rest of the players; “The Huntress” – Serena Williams.
She is going for her first Grand Slam, all in one year. The last player to do it on the women’s side was Steffi Graf in 1988. The only man to ever accomplish the feat was Rod Laver.
No less an authority on the game than John McEnroe already calls her the greatest female player of all-time. This win would cement that with most other commentators.
Williams has 21 Major titles. A win would tie her with Graf at 22, 2 behind Australian, Margaret Court. She has won 13 out of the last 25 Slams; and her close – out percentage when she steps on a finals court (84%) is arguably the highest in tennis history.
Williams appeared less than nervous at her press conference and very excited about the opportunity to win a Grand Slam in New York and her native USA.She noted that, “as of now, I don’t feel any (pressure).
Federer noted on Saturday that, “I hope she does it. It is intriguing to see.” Djokovic, the no. 1 men’s seed echoed that with, “I am sending Serena good vibes and hope she does it, a true champion.”
Williams has a difficult quarter, with possible early round matches against Sloane Stephens, who has beaten her, Madison Keys and perhaps her sister, Venus. She opens play on Monday night.
