OAKLAND, CA – As we come to the end of another basketball season African American head coaches are still struggling to be hired in 2015. One team is still in search of a leader as we move into the week of The Finals. The Los Angeles area and the New York area have four African American coaches.

In the past African Americans were not allowed to play until 1958. The First Black coach was Bill Russell of the Boston Celtics, eight years later.

All-Star, and Hall of Fame, Center, Bill Russell the first African American head coach won a championship. He took over the Boston Celtics in November of 1966, as a player-coach. Russell guided the Boston Celtic to another championship in 1969.  Russell retired in Seattle with the SuperSonics in 1988.

Five of these fine gentlemen have won championships as head coaches – Bill Russell-Boston Celtics (1968, 1969), Al Attles-Golden State Warriors (1975), Lenny Wilkens-Seattle SuperSonics (1979), and K.C. Jones-Boston Celtics (1984, 1986), Doc Rivers-Boston Celtics (2008). Note three of the five come are from the 18 time NBA Champion Boston Celtics.

 K.C. JONES

This year two young rookie coaches directed their teams to the National Basketball Association (NBA) Finals, Steve Kerr of the Golden State Warriors and David Blatt of the Cleveland Cavaliers. They will battle for the NBA Crown with great story lines for both teams. LeBron James will play in is 5th championship in a row. That has not been done since 1969. The Golden State Warriors can claim to be the best of the west with the Splash Brothers- Curry and Thompson and outstanding team defense.

It is time for another African American to raise the Larry O’Brien Trophy. Doc Rivers was the last Black head coach in Boston in 2008 to acquire the ring.

This year four African Americans lost their head coaching jobs Jacque Vaughn- Orlando Magic, Tyrone Corbin-Sacramento Kings, Brian Shaw-Denver Nuggets and Monty Williams-New Orleans Pelicans.

Melvin Hunt replaced Brain Shaw in Denver, Derrick Fisher went to Madison Square Garden and the New York Knicks, Alvin Gentry replaced Monty Williams in New Orleans.

Two coaches changed employment engineered their teams to the playoffs
Lionel Hollins of the Brooklyn Nets and Jason Kid of the Milwaukee Bucks got their teams to the playoffs.

Questions remain when will Mike Brown, Mark Jackson, or Mike Woodson get another chance to take their new teams to the championship.
