PHILADELPHIA (BASN): Thursday this week the formerly not-for-profit entity known as the National Football League takes its marketing road show to the Windy City for the 2015 Draft.

As Chicago is the first of locations in the quest for more dollars (provided this generates the de$ired effect), the gauge will be in comparing reaction from the Second City to New York City in determining whether this “event” will be a moneymaker for the League. If it does, then certain markets will have another calendar date their cities will passionately bid for; a long way from the basements of dusky hotels four generations ago.

Football’s popularity and the decline of baseball’s overall appeal has allowed for football’s hot stove season to generate far more heat than the Grand Old Game can keep up with.

However, this so – called “Path to the Draft” – is straight bullshit.
From Combines and forty yard dashes, the hype behind who runs faster, jumps higher and lifts more iron belie the fact that the physics of the game is left on the bench, so-called ‘experts’ jump at every empty calorie tidbit they can feed on, and I still, in over 30 years of playing, coaching and covering this sport have yet to see a stop watch…catch a muthafuckin’ football!
Which is why we need to hit The Playlist tonight for a special remix – and bring back an Oldie but Goodie from Back In the Day; from the British funk band Imagination:

“Just an Illusion” (written by Steve Jolley, Tony Swain, Ashley Ingram and Leee John)

Searching for a destiny that’s mine; there’s another place another time
Touching many hearts along the way, yeah…
Hoping that I’ll never have to say

It’s just an illusion, illusion, illusion

Follow your emotions anywhere…Is it really magic in the air?

Never let your feelings get you down – open up your eyes and look around

It’s just an illusion, illusion, illusion
Could it be that it’s just an illusion – putting me back in all this confusion?
Could it be that it’s just an illusion…now?
Could it be that it’s just an illusion; putting me back in all this confusion?
Could it be that – it’s just an illusion now?
Could it be a picture in my mind?
Never sure exactly what I’ll find
Only in my dreams I turn you on; here for just a moment then you’re gone

It’s just an illusion…
Could it be that – it’s just an illusion?
Putting me back…in all this confusion?
Could it be that – it’s just an illusion…now?

Could it be that – it’s just an illusion?
Putting me back…in all this confusion?
Could it be that – it’s just an illusion…now?

Unfortunately, for many of these young men in the Green Room or awaiting the call from home or their celebration location, the career offered by the NFL is, in many ways an illusion.
Given the size of the potential talent pool, the amount of sweat equity of laboring in a state of indentured servitude, a dream can go to a nightmare – in less than three and a half years…
So, in that spirit, here is my remix of ‘Illusion’ (with apologies to the formerly credited chaps).

“It Ain’t No Illusion” (M.L.Ingram)
Searching for a payday that is mine; but I know they’ll take their fucking time
Walking through the aisle and human wave
Freeing up this 100 Yard Turf Slave

It ain’t no illusion…illusion…illusion;
Feeling all the tension in the air; opinions of your talent you don’t share
Never let that bullshit get you down; those bastards make their cash to bash and clown

It ain’t no illusion…illusion…illusion

Drafting While You’re Black – it ain’t no illusion;
Putting up with crap – designed for delusion;
Letting all the facts – distort the solution…now

Is it just resentment in the mind?
Twenty million Bonus on the line…

Only Black, a quarterback and strong;
Strap on and show all of them they’re wrong

It ain’t no illusion!
Pay another Black? (it ain’t no illusion)
Gotta be on Crack – to think it’s inclusion
Better Hold Him Back – deny evolution…now

yeah yeah yeah yeah…
Pay Another Black…it ain’t no illusion!
Gotta be on Crack – to think it’s inclusion
Better Hold Him Back – deny evolution…now

(repeat and fade)

And With the First Pick of the 2015 Draft, The Tampa Bay Buccaneers Select…

Always outnumbered – never outgunned.
