WEEK #7 NFL BLACK QUARTERBACKS BY THE NUMBERS REPORT 2014

By:-Gary Norris Gray- BASN Staff Reporter
Last year African American quarterbacks reached for the stars with success. One weekend on the grid-iron ten Black quarterbacks started and garnered a 7-1 record with two injuries and two no decisions in week number seven. That was history but the American Sports media did not notice or report it. The question should be asked why only six quarterbacks of color starting in the National Football League?

* Black Quarterbacks- 7*

Not a good week for Black quarterbacks 0-5. The first time in 8 years.

*1) 3-3 Russell Wilson- Seattle Seahawks-rus

The Seahawks had a very rough week losing at home to the Dallas Cowboys then playing their first divisional road game in St. Louis. Plus they traded one of their best receivers Percy Harvin to the New York Jets. The Hawks seemed out of sync. Can’t blame Russell Wilson(23-36 with 312 yards two touchdown) Wilson also rushed for another touchdown and over one hundred yards on the ground. The Hawks came storming back in the fourth quarter only to be stopped by a disputed fumble, a fumble that seemed to have been recovered by defensive corner back Richard Sherman. Seattle lost its second game in a row 26-24, that has not happened since 2012.

General Wilson gets his team back into the game after a very slow start.  The Seahawks have only been blown out once in three years. What other NFL quarterback can claim this.

 *2) 4-3 Colin Kaepernick- San Francisco 49ers-

The Niners ran into a buzz saw in Denver. Payton Manning wanted to break the career passing record on this night at home. The Bronco defense shutdown the Niners stars, Vernon Davis (9 rushes for 20 yards) and Colin Kaepernick (3 rushes for 18 yards) with an early 14 Denver Broncos points in the 1st quarter.  Kappy tried to get the Niners back into the game the second period with 10 points but the Broncos just kept pouring it on. The Cherry and Gold ground game never materialized forcing Kaepernick (24-36 with 268 yards and one touchdown) to run on his own.

Payton Manning would get two more touchdowns in a Bronco beat down. The Niners could never get the running game started falling behind early.

The Denver Broncos win 42-17.

cam*3) 2-3-1 Cam Newton- Carolina Panthers-

Cam Newton and the Panthers went to historic Lambeau Field and fell flat on their face. Aaron Rogers and the Green Bay Packers scored 21 points in the first quarter on their first three posessions. This game was over Rogers(19-22 with 255 yards and three touchdowns) controlled the tempo the rest of the way keeping the ball away from Newton(17-21 with 205 yards and one touchdown) and the Panthers. Last week Newton ran for over 100 yards, Green Bay did not let that happen with seven rushing attempts for only 41 yards. Newton did not play the fourth quarter.

The Green Bay Packers win 38-17.

*4) 1-2 Teddy Bridgewater-Minnesota Vikings-

The Minnesota Viking defense snatched defeat from victory as the Buffalo Bills win the game on a last second touchdown 17-16. It was Bridgewater’s first road game in Buffalo as he threw two straight interceptions and was sacked six times, to stop drives in first half.

Teddy Bridgewater is going through rookie pains and the Vikings are feeling it. Bridewater gets his first NFL touchdown pass in the first half to Cordearrelle Paterson. Kyle Orton does it again for Buffalo Bills with late pass to Sammy Wakins with time running down.

The Buffalo Bills win 17-16.

*5) 1-6 Geno Smith- New York Jets-

On Thursday night All is not rosy in Jet land as the New England Patriots beat them 27-25.  There may be a  head coaching job opening in January in the Big Apple. Jet fans are not going to the game and that could spell doom for Head coach Rex Ryan. The New York Jets lost their 6th game in a row.00

The Jets played better but they were playing one of the best NFL quarterbacks, Captain America, Tom Brady (20-37 with 261 yards) and America’s 2nd team the New England Patriots who threw three touchdown passes.. New England won the game on a blocked field goal and a New York Jet fumble in the fourth quarter.

Geno Smith(20-34 with 226 yards and one touchdown) also played much better with a solid running game and not putting Smith in a third and long position. The New York secondary could be described as invisible, other quarterbacks love to play Gang Green and that’s not good for The Jets. The rough part of the schedule is over now we could be seeing New York Jet victories in the near future.

New England Patriots win 27-25.

*6) 2-2 E.J. Manuel-Buffalo Bills- DID NOT PLAY

*7) 0-1 Robert Griffin III- The Washington Football Club- DID NOT PLAY

The team wins a home game as another quarterback goes down. The third string signal caller Colt McCoy gives Washington a 19-17victory. The team snaps four game losing streak.
PLEASE DO NOT USE FEDEX until this company stops supporting Dan Snyder and the Washington Football Club’s team name. The corporate name of FedEx should be removed from the stadium.

TOTAL 13-20-1 WEEK 0-5

Black Head Coaches- 4
005-2 Mr. Caldwell- Detroit Lions-

Look out the Silver and Blue are taking names as they beat Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints. The Lion defense now ranks number one in the NFL and the Saints game just helped those statistics with two more interceptions and a fumble. Caldwell has changed the mindset of the defensive team with a little help from the Tampa Two Defense.

3-2-1 Marvin Lewis – Cincinnati Bengals-

The Halloween Cats get blasted by Andrew Luck (27-42 with 344 yards and two touchdowns) and the Indianapolis Colts 27-0. Lewis and Cinn. are on a three game losing streak counting the tie last week with the Panthers. Andy Dalton (18-38 with 126 yards and three sacks) could not get the offense started.  It was a good start for the Bengals but something is wrong with this team. Lewis could be the second coach to get his walking papers because this team has underachieved again.

3-3-1 Ron Rivera- Carolina Panthers-Latin Head Coach-

The Panthers are lucky they are in the NFC South Division at a 500 record they still set atop the division. The Cats ran into the hot Green Bay Packers and Aaron Rogers. The first quarter was a disaster with only five total years. Cam Newton (17-31 with 205 yards and one touchdown) had a so-so day and was pulled out of the game at the end of the third quarter. The Cats came back with 14 points in the fourth quarter but too little too late

4-3 Mike Tomlin- Pittsburgh Steelers-00

Mike Tomlin job’s is safe so far with a great performance. Monday night shines bright for the Steel Curtin as they take the place of the Oakland Raiders as Kings of Monday Night Football with 16-4 record. It did not start out right as the defense allowed 14 unanswered points in the first quarter.

The Big Ben Roethlisberger(23-33 with 265 yards and two touchdowns) offense cranked it up with 24 points in three minutes ending the game before halftime. The Steelers converted three Houston turnovers into touchdowns. The Steeler defense neutralized number 99 Mr. Watts for a 30-23 victory.

1-5 Lovie Smith- Tampa Bay Buccaneers- BYE WEEK

TOTAL 16-17-2 WEEK 2-2-0

 00Black General Managers-6
5-2 Baltimore Raven Ozzie Newsome-

The Atlanta Falcons do not like to play outside of the Georgia Dome and on this day it did not change. The Raven defense stuffed quarterback Matty “Ice” Ryan and the Falcon offense with five sacks and a safety.  The Purple Birds played locked down defense causing fumbles and interceptions all day long. In the first half the Ravens allowed only four first downs. Reminding many Raven fans of the Ray Lewis days.

Joe Flacco (16-25 with 288 yards and two touchdowns) showed up to guide the Purple Birds to first place in the AFC North Division.

The Baltimore Ravens win 29-7

5-2 Detroit Lion Martin Mayhew-00

Matthew Stafford must be living the good life as his Lions win again. Detroit stuns the New Orleans Saints 24-23. The Lions are still without all star receiver Johnson for another week. Wide out Golden Tate steps up and does the best he could with a 73 yard run that led to field goal.

Stafford threw two interceptions but stayed in the game. A pass interference saved the Lion as they get second chance. The Saints had the ball and driving as the time ran down in the fourth quarter.

The Detroit Lions win 24-24

3-4 Houston Texan Rick Smith-

The Houston Texans started the game the correct way controlling the ball with two long drives in the first period. Then it all fell apart three minutes before halftime.  Ryan Fitzpatrick (21-32 with 262 yards and two touchdowns) made a critical interception before halftime that turn the game around.  The Texans could not convert third downs and could not stop the Antonio Brown show. The Houston secondary is still a work in progress as the Texans lose their third straight to Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Pittsburgh Steelers win 30-23

4-3 Buffalo Bill- Doug Whaley-

The Buffalo Bills struggled all day long and just stayed within arms length of the Minnesota Vikings. The Bills defense helped win this game with recovering Viking fumbles and interceptions. Kyle Orton (31-42 with 283 yards and two touchdowns) kept a late fourth quarter drive alive with third and fourth down conversions.

The Buffalo Bills win 17-16.

3-4 The New York Football Giant Jerry Reese-

The New York Giants could see this season slowly slipping away playing and losing back to back to divisional foes, The Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys.

This week it was the Dallas Cowboys in Texas. Eli Manning looked like old Manning (21-33 with 248 yards and three touchdowns) but could not get help from anybody else. New York usually play well in A T & T Stadium but not on this day. The Giant defense could not touch quarterback Tony Romo as the Cowboy’s pocket stayed intact most of the day. Running back DeMarco Murray had another hundred yard rushing day his seventh and a NFL record.

The Dallas Cowboys win 31-21.

0020-6 Oakland Raider Reggie McKenzie-

The Raiders are the last winless team in the league this year as they played the red hot Arizona Cardinals.  Oakland lost their 12th game in a row and are now officially the worst team in the National Football League.

Cards quarterback Carson Palmer had something to prove to the Oakland Raider administration staff. He wanted to tell them they traded the wrong guy. Palmer made his point winning 24-13.

The Black and Silver keep improving week by week so maybe by the end of this year they might look like a real NFL team.

New Coach Sparano has restored sprite into the players now they have to return to basic football.

The Raiders need to cut down allowing teams to convert their third downs into first downs taxing the Black and Silver defense.

Quarterback Derek Carr returned the Raider offense to the old stretch passing- Al Davis style. Carr has the arm but the Raiders have to draft the receivers to complete the task.

Defensive cornerback Charles Woodson catches an interception for a score putting the Raiders 8 points behind. That’s as close as Oakland would get.

The Arizona Cardinals win 24-13.
