WEEK #2 NFL BLACK QUARTERBACKS BY THE NUMBERS REPORT 2014
By:-Gary Norris Gray- BASN Staff Reporter
Last year African American quarterbacks reached for the stars with success. One weekend on the grid-iron ten Black quarterbacks started and garnered a 7-1 record with two injuries and two no decisions in week number seven. That was history but the American Sports media did not report it. The question should be asked why only six quarterbacks of color starting in the National Football League?
THE HISTORY CONTINUES
This week’s games
Pittsburgh vs. Baltimore Thurs Night
Miami vs. Buffalo
Atlanta vs. Cincinnati
Arizona vs. New York Football Giants
Jacksonville vs. The Washington Football Club
Detroit vs. Carolina
Seattle vs. San Diego
St. Louis vs. Tampa Bay
New York Jets vs. Green Bay
Houston vs. Oakland
Chicago vs. San Francisco
* Black Quarterbacks- 6*
*1) 1-1 Russell Wilson- Seattle Seahawks- The Hawks get ambushed by Philip Rivers who threw three touchdown passes to Antonio Gates as the San Diego Chargers win 30-21. Rivers and tight end Gates break the record for most touchdown passes between tight ends and quarterbacks with a total of 65. San Diego kept the Hawks offense off the field all day with sustained drives.
Seattle commits too many mistakes and Wilson really tried to bring his team back from 8 point disadvantage. Russell Wilson 17-25 for over 200 yards with two touchdowns. The score did not reflect the dominance of San Diego.
The Legion of Dome could not stop the Bolts offense Sunday afternoon.
This early loss should clear the heads of the Seattle Seahawks who still could be riding high off of their Super Bowl Championship.
*2) 1-1 Colin Kaepernick- San Francisco 49ers- The 49ers played a very sloppy first half scoring 17 points, leading 17-7. Too many penalties (15 for 115 yards) prevented Niners from dismissing the Chicago Bears. The Chicago Bears score at the closing seconds at the end of the first half to keep them in the game. The Bears would not go away forcing the Niners into five mistakes and an eight point deficient, Chicago scored 20 points in fourth quarter for their first victory.
The tale of two half’s for Colin Kaepernick (21-34 for 248 yards, 4 sacks, one touchdown, one fumble, and three interceptions. Kappy ran for 66 yards in nine attempts. The Niners never got their rhythm and repeated history opening the huge Levis Stadium with a loss just as the team lost in the Kaesar stadium opening and also The Candlestick Park opening.
*3) 1-1 Geno Smith- New York Jets- Smith and the Jets built a 17 point lead the first half over the Green Bay Packers but the old Smith bug-a-boo showed up, winning one week then losing the next. Smith went 16 for 32 and 176 yards, running for a touchdown and throwing for a touchdown. The New York secondary broke down and Aaron Rodgers just picked Gang Green to pieces, throwing for three touchdowns in the second half.
Green Bay wins 31-24
*4) 2-0 E.J. Manuel-Buffalo Bills- The Buffalo Bills opened their new season at home with their throwback jersey’s, white helmets and red buffalo, a tribute to the late owner Ralph Wilson, and a 29-10 victory over the Miami Dolphins. C.J. Spiller ran for 102 yard kickoff return in the third period. E.J. Manuel also got an assist from wide out Sammy Watkins with his first touchdown of his career. Manuel went 16 for 26 and 206 yards with one touchdown.
*5) 1-0 Cam Newton- Carolina Panthers- Did not play last weekend and looked rusty in the first half. Newton went 22-34 and 281 yards with one touchdown. The Panther defense outshines the Detroit Lion defense shutting down quarterback Matthew Stafford and wide out Calvin Johnson, allowing only one touchdown.
Carolina had to deal with other outside issues such as activating or deactivating defensive end Greg Hardy.
Panthers win 24-7.
*6) 0-1 Robert Griffin III- The Washington Football Club- Robert Griffin III will be out the next few weeks as he dislocated his left ankle scrambling from the Jacksonville defense in the first quarter. A very quick game for Griffin went 2-3 for 38 yards and one sack. Griffin could be done for the 2014-15 season. It could be a great event to give Griffin’s right knee extra time to heal.
The Washington Football Club won with Kurt Cousins at quarterback (22-33 and 250 yards and two touchdowns). The team scored 21 unanswered points for 41-10 victory.
PLEASE DO NOT USE FEDEX until this company stops supporting Dan Snyder and the Washington Football Club’s team name. The corporate name of FedEx, should be removed from the stadium.
TOTAL-6-4 WEEK 2-3
Black Head Coaches- 4
2-0 Ron Rivera- Carolina Panthers-Latin Head Coach- Mr. Rivera wanted the Carolina Panthers to start a culture of change by deactivating defensive end Greg Hardy. Hardy was convicted of alleged domestic violence on July 15th. Rivera stated that it was a decision to benefit the team. Cats win 24-7.
2-0 Marvin Lewis – Cincinnati Bengals- The Halloween Cats are off to a great start beating up the Atlanta Falcons 24-10. Cinn. ran for over 500 which made Andy Dalton’s job easier guiding the Cats down field. The defense shut down Matty “Ice” Ryan and the Birds which has been the Bengals M.O. stopping great quarterbacks.
1-1 Mike Tomlin- Pittsburgh Steelers- The real Steeler defense did not show up. Pittsburgh had two great early drives in the first quarter but that was it for the Steel City, losing 26-6. Big Ben Roethlisberger threw one interception that changed the completion on this game.
1-1- Detroit Lions- Mr. Caldwell and the Lions have to find offense as they get manhandled by the Carolina Cats 24-7. Stafford had one of his historic meltdowns again.
0-2 Lovie Smith- Tampa Bay Buccaneers- This is not the way to start any season. The game was delayed for over 50 minutes because of severe weather. Then St. Louis Rams blocked the game leading field goal with time running down in the third quarter but that was not the whole story. The Bucs drove down the field for the winning score at the end of the game but when wide out Mike Evans got injured with less than eight seconds to go the officials stopped the clock mistakenly. But by rule with any injury with under ten seconds it is a ten second run off so the game ended Josh McCown went 16-21 for 179 yards, two rushing touchdowns, and one interception.
TOTAL 6-4 WEEK 2-4
Black General Managers-6
2-0 Buffalo Bill- Doug Whaley- Bills are off to 2-0 start first since 2002.
1-1 Detroit Lion Martin Mayhew- Not a very good game for the Motor City bunch. The Lions could not put a drive together until the fourth quarter, too little, too late.
2-0 Houston Texan Rick Smith- New head coach Bill O’Brien and Ryan Fitzpatrick (14-19 for 139 yards and two touchdowns) had a very easy day in the Black Hole as the Texans win their second game of the year 30-14. Houston capitalized on Oakland Raider mistakes. J.J. Watt went for his first touchdown and Arian Foster ran all over the Black and Silver for 158 yards. The Houston Texans are doing a much better job rebuilding their offense unlike the team by the Bay.
0-2 The New York Football Giant Jerry Reese- This team could be in serious trouble losing to the second string quarterback Ted Ginn Jr. of the Arizona Cardinals 25-14. Quarterback Eli Manning cannot find the new offense while the Big Blue defense don’t know where the field is. Four major mistakes by the offense cost New York this game and could cost Coughlin his head coaching job.
1-1 Baltimore Raven Ozzie Newsome- The Ravens overcame the week of struggles with the Ray Rice suspension issues. Flacco guided the Purple Birds to a 26-6 victory with a 21 for 29 night and two touchdowns. Strong swarming defense helped this team to their first victory of 2014. The tone of the game was set in the first period with a bone crunching tackle of Big Ben. The Steeler offense never showed up after that and did not find the end zone all night.
0-2 Oakland Raider Reggie McKenzie- RAIDER NATION might need to find some answers. Mistakes by Raiders, put the Black and Silver in jeopardy early in this game. The Houston Texans took the ball first and scored. That was the end of this game. The men wearing the Eye Patch and Shield did not show up. Three fumbles by the team and two interceptions by Derek Carr (27-42 and 263 yards with one touchdown) did not help. Raiders lose 38-14 and were never in the game. We might be seeing Matt scrub, I mean veteran Matt Schaub next week at quarterback.
PRIDE AND POISE and JUST WIN BABY!!!! are distant memories just as COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE seems to be a fading thought in the Oakland Alameda County Coliseum.
TOTAL 6-6 WEEK 3-3
