Hardcore hazing on and off the field
NORTH CAROLINA-(BASN)-Everyone is jumping to conclusions, formulating opinions and casting blame.
And, now, even potential lawsuits are pending, as famed sports attorney David Cornwell, who has defended athletes such Alex Rodgrieuz and Ryan Braun, offers his services to Jonathan Martin in the alleged case of workplace abuse involving his team mate Richie Incognito of the Miami Dolphins.
Despite all the publicity surrounding this conflict in the locker room, no one, however, really knows what really happened between these two offensive linemen.
So, as this story slowly reveals itself, CNN will probably have a round table discussion about the “Rise of Bullying in Sports” in big bold red letters, which probably will be hosted by Anderson Cooper.
As a result, I am pretty sure, several “white psychologists” like Dr. Drew, Dr. Phil and Dr. Dr. Laura Schlessinger are ready to make a guest appearance on one of these celebrity panels in order to offer free counseling as well as anger management techniques for the bullies causing havoc in the locker rooms throughout the NFL.
They also will probably develop some odd-ball theories on why bullying and hazing is an integral part of football, especially the NFL.
Along with these babbling psychologists, waiting on the sidelines, will be a host of political pundits, from the far right and the far left, who will suggest that the game of football has become too barbaric, and too violent, and must be policed, and possibly, eliminated from American society.
In their analysis, while denouncing the violent nature of the NFL and deeming the game uncivilized, they will fail miserably to mention that their beloved “America” was found on the slaughter of the Native Americans, the enslavement of Africans and the exploitation of the poor, which they celebrate every year during their so-called “Thanksgiving” holiday.
This bullying has come in the form of police brutality, government-sponsored assassinations, legal lynchings, Jim Crow, racial discrimination, economic sanctions, sexual harassment, military rapes, drone attacks, and atomic bombs like the ones dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.
Yet, most of us still pretend as if it never happened.
Walked away in the face of injustice.
Or, simply gave up in the mist of it all, while failing to fight back or offer any form of resistance.
Just like Jonathan Martin allegedly did.
Therefore, metaphysically, Incognito, who is a son of a Vietnam Veteran, was simply applying the same type of torture techniques that was utilized by the USA military against “so-called” foreign countries.
On August 8th our company executed a 10-year old boy. We shot him in the back with a full magazine M-16. Approximately August 16th to August 20th-I’m not sure of the date-a man was taken out of his hootch sleeping, was put into a cave, and he was used for target practice by a lieutenant, the same lieutenant who had ordered the boy killed. Now they used him for target practice with an M-60, an M-16, and a 45.
I don’t want to go into the details of these executions because the executions are a direct result of policy. It’s the policy that is important. The executions are secondary because the executions are created by the policy that is, I believe, a conscious policy within the military. Number one, the racism in the military is so rampant. Now you have all heard of the military racism. It’s institutionalized; it is policy; it is SOP (standard operation procedure); you are trained to be a racist. When you go into basic training, you are taught that the Vietnamese are not people. You are taught they are gooks and all you hear is “gook, gook, gook.” And once you take the Vietnamese people, or any of the Asian people, because the Asian servicemen in Vietnam is the burnt of the same racism because the GI over there do not distinguish one Asian from another. They are trained so thoroughly that all Asians become the brunt of this racism.
You are trained “gook, gook, gook, gook” and once military has got the idea implanted in your mind that these people are not humans, they are subhuman, it makes it a little bit easier to kill em.
As shocking as that my seem, and sound, during a recent episode of Jimmy Kimmel, there was a skit involving a panel of “kids”, who were asked, “What should America do about its heavy debt to China?”
As a result of this distasteful “so-called comedy skit” the Chinese community and Chinese supporters across the nation staged a national protest against ABC and Jimmy Kimmel.
And even though Kimmel has issued at least two apologies as well as ABC, protesters say they won’t stop protesting until Kimmel resigns.
Seriously, could you imagine if this skit was allowed to air, if the child said, “KILL all the Jews?
Heads would be rolling on the grounds.
However, we shouldn’t be shocked.
Why? Because, this open display of racism, can still be seen in the NONCHALANT attitude in the way the NFL is handling the protest involving Washington’s owner Daniel Synder’s continual usage of the term “Redskins.”
If this isn’t a classic case of workplace harassment and bullying, I don’t know what is?
Unfortunately, as the soap opera continues, Incognito will probably get stripped of his shoulder pads and have his helmet removed.
But, the bullying won’t stop.
Not in the USA’s foreign policy.
Not in the NFL locker room.
And, definitely, not in the broadcast booth.
