CONNECTICUT-(BASN)-She was the favorite and she won. There was some doubt in the Championship match, but it ultimately went according to script.
Serena Williams won her 5th US Open and 17th Grand Slam event by beating her current rival, Victoria Azarenka, 7-5, 6-7, 6-1. The wind was very difficult for both players.
Williams seemed most affected.
The 3rd set was all Williams, as Azarenka had few answers for her serve and pounding forehands.
So the debate begins, as Williams closes in on Steffi Graf’s 22 Grand Slam wins.
Williams, 31 seems impervious to age.
Actually, her game seems better now than it was 5 years ago.
She is stronger and a smarter tennis player.
Will she eclipse Graf?
Especially, since she went undefeated on clay this year and is that much tougher at the French, than in the past.
But that won’t necessarily make her the GOAT.
Williams has benefitted from having few top calibre players to compete against.
Azarenka is her only true rival now.
It does not appear that Maria Sharapova, a former rival will win another Grand Slam.
Graf had to compete against Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, Gabriela Sabatini, Monica Seles, Mary Pierce and Martina Hingis, among others.
Look for Williams to have another strong season next year if her health remains good and the debate will get louder.
