CONNECTICUT (BASN)-It was the biggest upset of the US Open thus far. One of the biggest upsets in the women’s game in 2013. 17 year old American Victoria Duval, from Haiti defeated no. 11 and former US Open champion, Samantha Stosur, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4. It was even closer than the score indicated.
Duval was not awed by the partisan American crowd and played the, “best I”ve played in my career” for the win.
Duval was mentored by Billie Jean King over the summer, who told her to, “have fun.” And she did on Tuesday evening.
It was Duval’s first Major win and yet another win in this Open for an American woman.
Stosur had 9 aces to none for Duval, but committed 56 unforced errors.Duval had 118 wins to 111 for Stosur.
Stosur entered the event off of a win, but after a break-up with her coach.
Duval was elated and poised in her post-match interview with Pam Shriver.
Duval will play Daniela Hantuchova, probably tomorrow.
She will also be playing mixed doubles with Donald Young.
Someday we may hear her name in the same vein as Sloane Stephens and to a lesser extent Taylor Townsend.
She might even win an Open.
