Dan Snyder’s Redneck Position: He Prefers Redskins To Red-Tails . . . .

As plaintiffs go yet-another round in the US courts, seeking to force The NFL’s Washington Redskins from using the term “Redskins” any longer.  District-of-Columbia Mayor Vincent Gray, a Democrat, suggested the “Redskins” would have to reconsider changing their name if they wanted to play “home” games in the city again.  The DC City Council is attempting to pass a toothless resolution demanding a name change . . . .

David Grosso, a member of the Washington D.C. Council, said he plans to submit a resolution calling on the Redskins to change their nickname because it is “racist and derogatory” and suggested “Redtails” in honor of the Tuskegee Airmen, a pioneering group of African-American pilots who served the United States in World War II, as a replacement.

With all this simmering on the stove . . . . Redskins owner Dan Snyder offered this little tid-bit to toss on the fire; “We will never change the name of the team. As a lifelong Redskins fan, and I think that the Redskins fans understand the great tradition and what it’s all about and what it means, so we feel pretty fortunate to be just working on next season. . . . We’ll never change the name. It’s that simple. NEVER—you can use caps.”

So gridiron tradition trumps societal respect. . . . I bet the owners of Sambo’s Restaurants  said the same damn thing, uh? I’d also make the point, George Marshall, legendary Redskins owner from yesteryear said he’d never let “Niggers” on his team . . . . he had to be threatened by President Kennedy to hire black players or face federal retribution.

The Redskins were the final NFL squad to integrate in 1962 . . . .

Just so you know where I’m coming from on this; I like to fancy myself, had I lived a century or-so-ago, as a “Buffalo Soldier,” who after years in the the Great White Father’s army, I went West, made peace with my noble Red brothers, lived in harmony with them in the vast-openness of the majestic Southwest,  hunted, fished . . . .

Here we are, 21st-century, and a fresh-off-the-griddle Associated Press-GfK poll shows that nationally –  “Redskins’’ still enjoys widespread support. Nearly four-in-five Americans, 79% of those polled  don’t think the team should change its controversial  name.  Only a hobbit’s handful, 11 percent think it should be changed.

In March, a multi-federal judge panel heard arguments from a group of Native American petitioners stating the NFL franchise ought-not receive federal trademark protection. This would be a move which might force Mr. Snyder to reconsider his “hi n’ all-so mighty” position of “We’ll never change the name. It’s that simple. NEVER—you can use caps.”

Susan Shown Harjo, a plaintiff in that case, said the AP poll results were “irrelevant” because popular opinion shouldn’t decide the issue.

“This is a really good example of why you never put racism up to a popular vote, because racism will win every time,” she said. “It’s not up to the offending class to say what offends the offended.”

I’ve never heard that point better-stated.

Furthermore, let’s keep it sharp n’ blunt here, if I say to Dan Snyder “Chief Sitting Bull Sioux of the Sioux, Chief Crazy Horse of the Ogeala Sioux/General George A. Custer, 7th Cavalry . . . tell me Mr. Snyder, who’re the “terrorist,” who’s the “hero?”  I’d bet a thousand paleface-scalps he’d conclude General Custer was the All-American hero, Sitting Bull the uncivilized barbarian.

Perhaps a noble savage, yet a savage nonetheless . . . here-in sits the problem.

While I contend Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse are the true, legit, genuine and authentic revolutionaries, defenders of the American Indian peoples, and it’s the US Soldiers, representing the Great White Father who is the ruthless, cutthroat invading marauder.

Most historians agree with me, as do most people who populate the planet Earth. Anyone who’s heard the story of “America” –  “what” it is and exactly “how” it came-to-be the empire it is today . . . they see it just as I do. It’s only the “Right” in this nation who can’t admit, from Columbus on – Pilgrims, Settlers, Sooners and Pioneers – all treated the American natives like they were . . . savages, and waged what can only be classified as “genocide.” A strategic, well-planned-out plot to exterminate an entire people . . . because you desire the resources of the land they occupy.

I believe the 6th grade term is “Manifest Destiny.”

So my humble thought;  Dan Snyder doesn’t share the respect, empathy, sympathy nor the unwanted pity most maintain for the American Indian, and this is where the train jumps-the-track.  If he did, then he wouldn’t come-off like the arrogant, disconnected, pompous, elitist detached-from- reality and history aristocrat that he personifies by mouthing this type of guilt-free gibberish.

He must be a White male, i.e., Republican.

A name, like “the Redskins” hales from an era in this nation’s lore where the same White majority who coined it, had belittling terms-of-endearment for all of mankind’s misfits and oddballs; like Nigger, Chink, Spic, bitch, Injune . . .

“Who” I ask designated, of all the people in the world, in the world I say . . . who made White folks the sole-arbitrators of what is racist or not racist . . . ? Are we serious here? The disciples of Archie Bunker can now legitimately claim to be the judges and magistrates for what’s offensive, insulting and degrading? Just the notion they’re supposed fair and impartial umpires of issues surrounding race, gender or economic class is not only laughable, it’s scary.

I’d venture to say the American White male hasn’t an ounce of credibility with much of the world when it comes to treating other people, especially people-of-color with respect and decency.

Honestly, as we all know, it’s just the bi-polar opposite.

“Red Tails,” honoring Black American fighter-pilots from WWII, as opposed to “Redskins” which unquestionably does not glorify a people who were the victims of the USA – a deliberate, systematic war was waged against them to annihilate them. I’d wager “Rednecks” rather fight to stick with “Redskins” and have no desire to place Red-Tails, aka Black heroes on a pigskin pedestal . . . watch.
