Cam Newton and RGIII . . . Pitted Against Each Other?
“You want me to be at his head because he said he didn’t want to be like me?” Newton asked reporters. “No. That’s nothing I want to frown upon. That’s him, the way he thinks. That’s what makes him Robert Griffin III. The way I think makes me Cameron Newton.”
DENVER, CO. (BASN)—Yes Cam, “they,” the White male dominated world of sports reporting along with a NFL fan base that is still over 65% White – they want you to ‘be at his head” if not RGIII’s throat . . . .
This slice of the All-American Pie, White males, they’ve a long history of practicing the technique of “divide n’ conquer,” of pitting their enemies against one-another; from Indian tribes to slaves to the leaders of social movements which pose a threat to White male dominance of . . . anything.
Cam Newton and Robert Griffin III, along with Mike Vick, Josh Freeman and Wilson pose a formidable threat to the fake, make-believe, artificial stranglehold White guys have created for the most enviable, desirable alpha male position in US culture . . . and once the floodgates are opened, that’s it, the fairytale is over. Give it 25 years and you’ll see a immobile, fragile mannequin-like White qb, like you see a premier White running back today . . . hardly never if ever.
And the same thought somewhat applies to the Presidency, Obama has proven to be a formidable threat to the fake, make-believe, artificial stranglehold White guys have created for the most enviable, desirable alpha male position in US culture . . . and once the floodgates are opened, that’s it, the fairytale is over with Obama as the ‘first” we all know there will be more to come, and what we know for sure is – the stranglehold White guys had on the Oval Office is over . . . and the “colorization of America” insures it.
It took this President a few years to grasp the simplicity of his plight . . . he’s damned if he does, damned if he doesn’t, he’s a Black man in a position never intended for him to occupy, he can do no right.
I hope it doesn’t take Cam nor RGIII a few seasons before they understand they can do no real right, and if they ever stray from the straight n’ narrow path White society has designated for them . . . release the media hounds!
Let RGIII merely mutter the words “there’s a different set of rules and expectations for Black QB’s” but I doubt he nor Cam ever will, they understand the “politics” of the sports.
For about the last two years I’ve been blowing RGIII’s horn, patting him on the back, singing his praises, nevertheless I’m troubled by his logical, analytical approach to life; When asked about the upcoming Presidential election he offered this one to chew on; ”There’s three things you don’t talk about: race, religion and politics. … It only starts arguments,”
Thank God Muhammad Ali, Tommy Smith and John Carlos weren’t as logical . . . .
For as much as I believe this kid is the genuine, authentic, legitimate ice-cold running you know what, I’m saddened by this weak-ass going-along-to-get-along accommodating, non critical, mamsi–pamsi non-confrontational, conformist philosophy.
The world’s got enough conformist, and lord knows the last thing young Black men need as a role model is yet another brother not willing to take a stand unless they’re endorsing a product.
I’m sorry, but I’d like to have seen this kid step-up and say what I can only hope he believes, vote for Obama, vote Democrat, vote for the little people.
It wasn’t but a few weeks ago Newton delivered this observation; “When it comes to [racism] I don’t think there is any at all. I’m just going to continue to do the things that have gotten me to this point and focus on trying to win a football game.”
Of course Newton is lying, and he knows he’s lying . . but he can’t say-so.
Gentlemen, you’d better strap-it-on, because the next few years you’re going to be under an enormous amount of pressure to criticize each other and to crumble under the endless pressure of being not simply analyzed but scrutinized and dissected by a segment of society, which for all the big picture reasons . . . wants you to fail.
Keep your eyes n’ ears open, your head on a swivel, there’re journalistic cheap-shot artist as there are cheap-shot artist on the gridiron . . . .
