FLUSHING, NY (BASN)—The greatest tennis event is the world starts on August 27 at Flushing Meadows. The US Open. No it does not have the prestige of Wimbledon, but it is a tennis Disneyland.
There is something for everybody. Great tennis, fabulous eating of all varieties and world class shopping. And tickets remain for many sessions.
On the men’s side it is Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and all the rest. They are that dominant and Rafael Nadal is out with a knee injury which could threaten his career. The winner will come from that group. There is little doubt. Federer is coming off of a Wimbledon win over Murray and Murray followed that up with an Olympic win at Wimbledon over Federer.
We do have a healthy Andy Roddick for the first time in years and he could win a few matches. He is a former winner.
On the women’s side, Serena Williams is playing some of the best tennis of her life, coming off of wins at both Wimbledon and the Olympics. Maria Sharapova looks like her biggest challenger, but the way Williams is playing, there really is no challenger. Her serve is the best ever for a woman.
Sloane Stephens likes the event and she could win a few matches, but is not a threat to win it all.
In women’s doubles, the Williams sisters are playing and they just won the Olympics.
The qualies (Qualifiers pre tournament) begins on Tuesday and is a full 128 player draw for both men and women. Admission is free and some of the food places are open. There is no better value in sports in this 2 out of 3 set format for berths in the main draw.
Also, if watching the qualies one might wander over to the practice courts and see a Federer, Williams or Sharapova hitting and available for autographs after.
