BOSTON, MA.(BASN) What a night to remember in the TD Garden on February 7th 2012, as the Boston faithful got to see history in the making as Paul Pierce “The Truth” surpassed Larry Bird for second on the Celtics all time scoring list. Coming into the game Paul Pierce was 9 points away from tying Larry Bird for second on the Celtics all time list and 10 points away from passing him. With that being said the Celtics had the visiting Charlotte Bobcats rolling into town with the Celtics winning 9 out of 10 games and it looks as if they have their legs back under them.
In a class by himself
From the start of the game the buzz around the arena was all for Paul Pierce as the crowd had wanted to see Pierce pass Larry Bird in Celtics history but, Kevin Garnett had other things in mind as he got off to a quick start in the first quarter scoring 8 quick points followed by Pierce’s 5 points which made him 5 points away from passing Bird. In the second quarter you can tell that the fans and players were getting anxious for Pierce to score five points to pass Bird because, every time he had the ball in his position he was getting closer to history. Paul Pierce only scored two points in that second quarter giving him seven points going into halftime against the Bobcats as the score was 45-38 Celtics leading. Third quarter had started with Pierce needing three points to pass Bird and every time he touched the ball and shoot a three, you would see camera’s flashing and people standing.
As the game was going along you can tell that Pierce’s urge to pass Bird was turning this game for the worst as the Celtics were forcing the ball to Pierce and he was forcing up shots. At 10:23 in the third quarter Pierce gets the ball from Rajon Rondo for a wide open three and nails it passing Larry Bird for second all time in Celtics history. Pierce threw his hands up for the crowd to cheer and waved to the boston faithful and waved to his mother and wife in the crowd. Passing Larry Bird is a big deal because, for so long Bird has been the face of the franchise and with that three pointer by Pierce he has passed him finally. Paul Pierce has over come so much in his Celtics career from being in trade rumors, his stabbing, and people labeling him a ball hog. This moment was a special moment for him and any Celtic fan that has been there through the thick and thin.
The Celtics finally got back into the swing of things after Pierce’s historical three pointer and Ray Allen got hot in the third quarter scoring thirteen of the Celtics twenty-four points in the quarter. The Celtics were on a roll going into the fourth and weren’t letting up as KG and Rondo were silently having great games. The Celtics played great defense on Kemba Walker and tried to stop him from attacking the basket in the fourth quarter and they did that holding him to only two points in the fourth. The Celtics went on to beat the Bobcats 94-84 with KG having 22 points off of 10-15 shooting on the night and a massive dunk that got the crowd involved. Rajon Rondo had a double-double with 10 points and 14 assists but the night belonged to Pierce even though he had a bad shooting night he still passed Larry Bird and that was all that mattered because, they still were able to get the win and got help from the other big three.
The Celtics are playing the LA Lakers next as they come off their lose to the Sixers they try to improve to 15-11 against the Celtics. With the Celtics playing as good as they have I feel like they can pull this one out if the big 4 come to play and play good defense it is possible. Lakers and Celtics games always have history behind them and they play twice a year so with this game building the hype we will see who wins the battle.
Paul Pierce Passes Larry Bird For Second All Time
Post Game Interview with Paul Pierce
Talk about breaking the record?
It was a relief so much was hanging over me these couple days and knowing you gotta play the game and so many people talking about it. It was a great feeling knowing that I’m up there with Larry Bird and he’s one of the most important players in this franchise.
How did you feel about the video tribute for you?
I saw a little of it I will soak it in when I get home because it’s so fresh in my head right now.
Growing up in Inglewood if someone said you would pass Larry Bird, what would you say?
Growing up in Inglewood I would of thought I wouldn’t be a Celtic at the time but it’s incredible because , in my mind he 1 of the top 5 players and just to be mentioned with him I’m grateful.
Your 4500 points away from the number 1 Celtic scorer of all time will it be a piece of cake?
I know the city would rather a championship first.
