DENVER, CO. (BASN)–-Bryant Gumbel has officially, eternally designated himself as an Uppity Nigger . . . at least around suburban/rural TEA Party coffee tables, and this time around I don’t think the “powers-that-be” are going to forgive him. He’s always been know for aggravating and irritating White America with his self-sureness/arrogance, his not knowing his place . . . that’s what I respect about him. His Jack Johnson signed Black Man ID Card (with the Malcolm X stamp) is in the mail. Gumbel displayed the audacity to articulate the truth, the absolute truth describing exactly what type of business relationship, exists between the vastly all Black NBA players and the league commissioner David Stern; that of an plantation owner and his Mandingo Bucks, livin’ n’ breathin’ human property. “Stern’s version of what has been going on behind closed doors has of course been disputed, but his efforts were typical of a commissioner who has always seemed eager to be viewed as some kind of modern plantation overseer, treating NBA men as if they were his boys. It’s part of Stern’s M.O., like his past self-serving edicts on dress code and the questioning of officials. His moves were intended to do little more than show how he’s the one keeping the hired hands in their place.” “Some will of course cringe at that characterization but Stern’s disdain for the players is as palpable and pathetic as his motives are transparent, ” Go head with your bad-ass self, tell it like it really is. My Nana always said “ tell the truth, shame the devil.” More importantly Gumbel is accurately articulating the perspectives of millions upon millions of Black American Sportsfans – an viewpoint which is strategically and deliberately slighted, minimized and if nothing else, ignored by White America and the established elitist sports press which is after all over-populated with politically conservative-minded (angry) White guys. The idea that Black people think as Gumble thinks . . . makes White folks, dig this – uncomfortable. And Lord knows we can’t have that! The fact Gumble has the testicles to be both sharp n’ blunt, well that ignites a fire, a burning blue-flame under the asses of Rednecks from Alaska to Nebraska, Fargo to Key Largo. That’s not how White America prefers its Negroes. They’d rather not believe we’ve common sense and instead seem to adopt this mentality that Blacks are docile fools and we can’t see the vast ways we are pimped and exploited – used, manipulated . . . insulted. We’re to simple-minded and child-like to grasp that our overall intelligence and humanity is being spat-upon in uncountable ways. I’d venture to say White America’s collective, monolithic mindset is inherent, passed-on and down from one generation to another; history easily shows White America likes to believe we’re all sittin’ down in the slave shacks/projects/post Katrina Superdome . . . eatin’ Watermelon, smokin’ Crack, having neanderthal-like sex, living like happy animals. America’s damn near lily-White sports press, the editors and publishers specifically abide by some “code-of-silence” in-that they refuse to allow the Hobbit’s handful of Black writers across this nation working in major sports-media outlets to amplify the thoughts and observations of Black sportsfans. This is pulled-off by not hiring Black writers, and when they do incorporate Blacks into the frat house . . . they must sound like Jason Whitlock - an 379 pound House-negro who adheres to all the “Step n’ Fetch it” whims of his oversees. This cocoa version of Rush says what Good Ol’ Boys can’t. A hallow-outTrojan ground sloth stuffed-full of insults and slights of Black sports figures. Whitlock is the sports worlds version of real world Uncle Toms like Hermain Cain, Starr Parker, Rev. Jesse Phillips, Ward Connelly, Larry Elders, Clarence Thomas . . . as you can see the list of spineless, yellow-belled sell-outs who’ve sold their souls to the very individuals, institutions and organizations which have worked overtime to “turn the Black race round” and put us back in our 1949 proper submissive place is substantial. Benedict Arnolds come in all shapes, sizes n’ colors, and more tragic, it seems most people come with a price-tag stamped on our asses. The tragedy here is White men not only steadfastly refuse to confess the sinister and barbaric aspects of US Slavery – they refuse to admit any contemporary connections and relationships which still exist in modern-day American race relations. I personally believe Bryant Gumbel should be awarded the first Huey P Newton/Bobby Seale “Black Power” award. His Blackness ought not be questioned nor debated, (and it has been) for he’s, again, stood-up n’ spoke-up when others – most – wont get-up off their black asses and say anything. He’s got a history of bringing truth-to-power which must be recognized and respected. Back in 2006, Gumbel referred to then NFL Players Assn. executive director Gene Upshaw as then league commissioner Paul Tagliabue’s “personal pet, Before he cleans out his office have Paul Tagliabue show you where he keeps Gene Upshaw’s leash. By making the docile head of the players union his personal pet, your predecessor has kept the peace without giving players the kind of guarantees other pros take for granted. Try to make sure no one competent ever replaces Upshaw on your watch. That same year, Gumbel made this comment about the Winter Olympics; “Try not to laugh when someone says these are the world’s greatest athletes, despite a paucity of blacks that makes the Winter Games look like a GOP convention.” Please, tell me where the man’s lying?! Sad to say, there’s the prospect that angry, insecure and envious White guys – Herman Cain or Rick Perry supporters who happen to be sportsfans will demand, Gumble be silenced for . . . what? Offering a viewpoint widely expressed in Black folks barbershops, backyard bar-b-q’s and sportsbars across the land – but never heard on mainstream media outlets because of the tactical exclusion of Black thought and opinion. The false rage and fake outcry damning Mr. Gumble is one which ought be dismissed based on the grounds; the oppressor, or at least the descendants of – can’t be the sole-arbitrator of “what’s over-the-top”, “not called for” or god forbid “racist.” It falls under the guise of the “pot calling the Kettle Black,” or the TEA Party Member , a TEA Bagger, calling the Klansman a racist. They’re one-in-the-same.
