GREEN BAY, Wis.(BASN) – What was the reward for the Green Packers after winning their opening home game, Sept. 8, against the New Orleans Saints? The players got a five-day break because their next game was in 10 days.

The Super Bowl champs played well enough to beat the Saints, 42-34, at Lambeau Field. After having last Friday through Tuesday off, they will go back to work and prepare for their first of two straight road trips of the season, beginning with the game at Carolina, Sept. 18.

Anyone who saw the Packers dominate on offense with their passing attack and some defense know that they’re not letting up. With quarterback Aaron Rodgers back in the groove again, it’s full steam ahead for the green and gold.

Some of the attention in the game was focused on the two quarterbacks: Rodgers and Drew Brees. The Saints’ signal caller was commended for organizing offseason workouts with his team during the NFL lockout. Rodgers was criticized for not doing the same.

Some of the guys, especially the rookies, wanted to hook up with the Super Bowl MVP. Rodgers wanted to do his own thing and wait until training camp to rejoin his teammates. All was forgiven because he led the team to victory.

In the post game interview, Rodgers had a sarcastic response to the question of offseason workouts after the Packers got off to a fast start. “I’ve just got to ask myself, ‘What would’ve happened if we had offseason workouts? Could we have started any faster and scored more points?’ “

Okay, we get it. A convincing win in the matchup of the last Super Bowl winners is nothing to write home about. That was just one game and one win. Rodgers must be careful not to let the increased notoriety go to his head. For the most part, he has his head on straight because it’s an easy climb to the top but a hard fall to the bottom.

Most people think that the Packers have the ingredients for a return trip to the Super Bowl. They have a lot of receivers who can stretch the field and a rookie sensation that scored two touchdowns and tied an NFL record for running back a kickoff 108 yards.

Head coach Mike McCarthy thinks that Randall Cobb is just scratching the surface. “You’ve got to be excited about Randall.” He said. “He’s shown that from the first day of training camp his ability. When other players talk about a player having a chance to be special, he is one of those guys.

“He’s very raw. He’s picking up our system. But he knows what to do when he gets the football in his hands, and he knows how to get open. He’s a gifted young man with a lot of good football in front of him.”

Every game for the Packers is like a playoff game because they have the target on their backs. Every team will take their shots.
