NEW YORK, NY (BASN)–The weather was beautiful at the US Open on Monday as Hurricane Irene was a distant memory. The tennis was even better.
Young 16-year old American Madison Keys from Boca Raton upset favored American Jill Craybas,6-2,6-4 at the Grandstand to start off the day.
19-year old American phenom Christina McHale folowed the Keys win with a 6-3,6-7,6-4 upset of Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada.
The evening belonged to Venus Williams. Remember her?The unseeded 31-year old veteran easily defeated no. 91 Russian,Verna Dolonts 6-4,6-2 in the first evening match.Dolonts had actually arrived in new York on Monday due to visa problems and the Hurricane.
Williams was smooth and comfortable in winning her first match since the third round of Wimbledon. She has been injured since then.
Many call Serena Williams the odds on favorite to win the event despite being seeded only no. 28,but don’t count out Venus from making a run.The US Open is her favorite tournament and she is moving as well as she has all year.
Serena is the featured match at the Open on Tuesday night.
