CONNECTICUT (BASN)–Serena is back. Maybe. She just won the Bank of the West Classic over Marion Bartoli, 7-5,6-1. She is now in the top 100 again. Promoters in Toronto and Cincinnati must be thrilled. They may get a couple of wins from her in these big upcoming events.
She's back with a bang
But don’t kid yourself. Serena is not about Cincinnati. She is about the US Open. The biggest event for any American which starts on August 29.
Serena has won 3 Opens, the last being in 2008.
She is playing now as well as she has in a year, largely because of injuries. But more importantly she would like to peak for Flushing Meadows.
The win was her first non-Major win since 2009.
She would love to win either of the next two events leading up to the Open, but a good performance in either or both would do the trick.
If Serena wins one of the two or makes a couple of finals she will end up as a seeded player at the Open.
She will also be the favorite to win the Open. Her easy win against Maria Sharapova in California made that clear.
Sharapova and Kim Clijsters would be favorites entering the Open without a strong Serena. Now we have presumably a strong Serena.
How will Venus do at the Open. Tough to tell right now,but Serena is another story. A story who can be holding a Trophy on the night of September 10.
