The Calhoun Crew

CONNECTICUT (BASN) — Has any men’s or women’s college basketball team in the country played beyond expectations more than UConn?

It’s very doubtful. Actually, this may be Jim Calhoun’s best coaching job ever and that is after a lot of great coaching jobs and two National Championships.

The Huskies are 16-2 (4-2) and a top 5 team nationally. They are playing as well as anyone in the Big East except perhaps Pittsburgh. And consider this — the Big East coaches picked UConn to finish 10th in Conference.

That’s definitely not happening.

UConn had an ambitious out of conference schedule which included Michigan State, Kentucky, Wichita State, Tennessee and Texas on the road. They’ve swept them all.

This season, Calhoun has used a veteran (Kemba Walker), another player with experience (Alex Oriakhi), and a bunch of freshmen like Jeremy Lamb.

At Big East media day at The Garden back in October, Calhoun was extolling the virtues of his team. Many listened. Few believed him. They all do now.

Calhoun had a more talented team last year led by Stanley Robertson and Jerome Dyson but they didn’t play like a team. This year they are a team first.

Can they win a National Championship? Probably not.

But they will be a force to be reckoned with in March.
