NEW YORK (BASN) — Arvell Nelson scored on a 10-yard touchdown run in overtime and host Texas Southern rallied to beat Grambling State 41-34 on Thursday night in Houston.

Texas Southern scored 24 unanswered points after Anthony Carrothers’ 1-yard run gave Grambling a 34-17 lead with 4:11 left in the third quarter.

Martin Gilbert had a 1-yard touchdown run early in the fourth, Nelson tossed a 23-yard TD pass to Richard Samuel and Robert Hersh tied it with a 20-yard field goal with 15 seconds remaining.

Marcus Wright rushed for 171 yards and a touchdown for Texas Southern (7-3, 7-1 SWAC), which finished with 370 yards on the ground. Nelson had 21 carries for 147 yards and two scores, and threw for 171 yards and a TD.

Grambling’s Edward Patterson had a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and Derrick Wilhite returned an interception 38 yards for another score.

Grambling (8-2, 7-1), currently ranked No. 1 in the latest Boxtorow.com/BASN HBCU FCS coaches and media top 10 polls, finished with 220 yards, just 90 through the air.

No. 4 South Carolina State 32, Morgan State 10

Malcolm Long threw two touchdown passes, Blake Erickson kicked three field goals and visiting South Carolina State beat Morgan State on Thursday night in Baltimore.

Asheton Jordan rushed for 88 yards and a score for the Bulldogs (8-2, 6-1 MEAC), who led 24-10 at halftime.

David Brown had a 7-yard touchdown run in the second quarter for Morgan State (4-6, 3-4), which struggled on offense.

The Bears finished with minus-17 yards rushing on 34 attempts, and just 154 yards overall.

Long completed 17 of 31 passes for 209 yards with one interception. He tossed a 47-yard touchdown pass to Tyler McDonald to make it 10-0 in the first quarter, and added a 37-yard TD pass to Thomas Williams with 10:27 left in the first half.
