New rankings, same results

NEW YORK (BASN) — For the fourth straight week, South Carolina State (3-1) is the top team in the latest editions of the Boxtorow.com/BlackAthlete.com HBCU Coaches and Media Top 10 polls. The Bulldogs were again a unanimous choice in the coaches’ top ten while they garnered 20 of 23 first-place votes from the media poll. Grambling State (3-1) is ranked second in both polls. Buddy Pough’s squad opened MEAC play this past weekend with a 19-0 blanking of Florida A&M at Tallahassee. In the win, SCSU rolled up 409 yards while holding the Rattlers to 106 total yards including 48 on the ground. They’ll look to extend their MEAC record 20-game winning streak Saturday at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium in Orangeburg against the Spartans of Norfolk State. As for this week’s coaches’ poll, No. 3 Bethune-Cookman (5-0) and No. 4 Jackson State (3-1) flipped flopped their positions from last week while No. 5 Hampton (3-1) and No. 6 Alcorn State (3-1) remained the same. The other four spots included Tennessee State (3-2), who jumped from ninth to seventh, Norfolk State (2-2) is eighth, FAMU (2-3) dropped from seventh to ninth, and Texas Southern (2-3) debuts this week at 10th. On the media side, No. 3 Winston-Salem State (6-0) and No. 4 Albany State (5-0) maintained their spots from last week while No. 5 Tuskegee (4-1) and No. 6 Morehouse (5-0) each moved up one spot. Making up the rest of the top 10 are Tennessee State at seven, Bethune-Cookman debuting at eight, Jackson State is ninth, and FAMU drops from fifth to 10th. Other games this weekend include WSSU hosting Saint Augustine’s in a CIAA contest at Bowman Gray Stadium, Delaware State travels to Bethune-Cookman in a key MEAC matchup, and Morehouse battles Tuskegee at McClung Stadium in the 75th Morehouse-Tuskegee Classic.
