NEW YORK (BASN) — For the second straight year, Boxtorow.com and BASN have combined to put together the only weekly Black college football poll that is voted upon by the FCS head coaches of HBCU’s. Not much has changed since the 2009 season ended. The three-time defending MEAC champions from South Carolina State are sitting on top on the BTRC/BASN Preseason FCS HBCU Coaches Top 10 Poll which was released Thursday.
Buddy Pough’s Bulldogs (10-2), who had eight players named to the preseason All-MEAC first team, received 15 of 20 first-place votes.
Five other schools shared the remaining first-place votes including second-ranked Prairie View A&M (9-1) and third-ranked Florida A&M (8-3).

Both the Bulldogs and Panthers had been 1-2 for most of the second half of the 2009 season. They both went undefeated in respective conference play with SCSU posting eight straight wins against MEAC competition.

Entering 2010, SCSU has won a MEAC-record 19 straight games dating back to 2007. They’ll open the season on Saturday, September 4th in Atlanta as they take on the Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech at Bobby Dodd Stadium.

Rounding out the preseason top five includes Grambling State (7-4) at number four and Alabama A&M (7-5) at number five. Finalists in last year’s SWAC championship game, the Bulldogs and Prairie View have been picked to repeat as respective division champions for the 2010 season.

The rest of poll has Norfolk State (7-4) at six, Texas Southern (6-5) at seven, Hampton (5-6) at eight, Morgan State (6-5) sits at nine, and Southern (6-5) is tenth. The Pirates and Jaguars both received a first-place vote.

Led by first-year coach Stump Mitchell, Southern will open the season on Sunday, September 5th in Orlando, Fla. when they meet the Hornets of Delaware State in the MEAC-SWAC Challenge at the Citrus Bowl.

The game, scheduled for a 12 noon ET kickoff, will be shown live on ESPN.
