Angel City Classic canceled again
“Much to our regret, we are shifting our focus and planning for a 2010 Angel City Classic (ACC) to a 2011 event. In spite of the economy, our organization remained optimistic up until the extended deadline however; we were not able to gain the needed sponsorship agreements necessary to produce the event in a manner which fans have come to expect,” said a statement on the event’s web site.
Farmers Insurance had secured title sponsorship of the event but “a business decision had to be made for the protection of all involved including our highly respected participating HBCU’s” according to the web site.
The game began in 2007 when Prairie View beat NC A&T, 22-7 before 32.278 fans at the Los Angeles Coliseum.
The following year PVAM defeated Morehouse, 28-17 in front of a national television audience and a Coliseum crowd of 52,487.
Last year’s rematch between Prairie View and Morehouse, scheduled for September 19 was canceled in April, 2009.
This year’s cancelation along with the demise of the Silver Dollar Classic creates doubt about the future of HBCU Classic games on the West Coast.
No word on whether Tuskegee and Texas Southern will try to play each other at another venue.
