(BASN) — Maybe Jets’ rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez should start a new career as a competitive eater and enter the International Hot Dog Eating Contest at Coney Island after the camera caught him wolfing down a hot dog during New York’s 38-0 victory over the Raiders last Sunday.
Sanchez, who was (9-for-15 with 143 yards and one touchdown) only ate one hot dog. However, he may not be much competition for Takeru “Tsunami” Kobayashi or the current world champion Joey “The Jaws” Chestnut.
He ate a “disgusting” 68 hot dogs in 10 minutes which is a new hot dog eating record. New York, in fact is the best place to host a hot dog eating contest because New Yorkers eat more hot dogs than any other city.
Americans, oddly, spend more than $1.9 billion at the supermarket on hot dogs annually. In 2006, Americans ate enough hot dogs at major league ballparks to stretch from RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. to AT&T Park in San Francisco according to www.sixwise.com
so don’t feel bad Mark.
Even though Sanchez’s sideline snack left a bad taste in some sports fans’ mouth — it’s been labeled Hot Dog gate by some journalists — the innocent incident has had a positive ending.
According to the Huffington Post, the hot dog loving Sanchez, who was unfortunately captured on “Candid Camera” decided to purchase more than a 1,000 hot dogs and hamburgers for the Community & Soup Kitchen of Morristown, New Jersey.
