A Very American Coup By Michael – Louis Ingram, Editor-in-Chief...
Straight No Chaser: Freedom Fighters
The Vick Affair will be another episode in the American Experience, another Black man who had the book thrown at him, another Black man made an example of.
Another Black man who’s handling by the US legal system graphically defines the duplicity that is America; there’s a White man’s justice, and there’s the over-the-top extreme injustice justice historically reserved for Black folks.
Nevertheless, Vick’s new jersey, on E-Bay . . . going for over 300 dead presidents, well beyond the retail price. Basic supply and demand. Few folks in the mainstream anticipated the widespread demand for Vick’s jersey . . . they thought everybody thought like they did . . . and despised Vick.
How can that be? How can there be any demand for his jersey considering how influential elements of society have tried to paint him as a monster, who’s not deserving of a second chance? Apparently they don’t have much sway, much clout with well over half of the people in America.
The silenced majority . . .
The silenced majority . . .Remember where you heard it first.
As I understand, on-line purchasing of the ” Wise Latina” Tee’ shirts are selling like . . . hot tamales That, the catch phrase of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s Senate confirmation hearings has since taken on a life of its own.
The newest Supreme used the phrase most notably in a 2001 speech in which she told Hispanic law students she hoped: ” a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life.” This comment inflamed already hot racist on the Right. She was a fighter.
Here’s what crystal clear – It’s irrelevant how many grumpy White guys, old and young, tried to brand her with the term “wise Latina” it has become a calling card for Latino women, they’ve embraced it, donning those tee-shirts with pride, understanding what Judge Sotomayor was implying. . .
I’ll see you as people, not inferior, lazy. . . aliens.
Among the spin-off items: “My Mother is a Wise Latina,” “I’m marrying a wise Latina ,” and “I’d rather be a Wise Latina,” T-shirts, as well as “Wise Latina in training,” Onesies. Latina Magazine is offering a limited edition T-shirt.
The obvious question; how can two individuals, polarizing figures like Sotamayor and Vick be embraced ? Might I suggest, their popularity speaks to the irrelevance of what Archie Bunker thinks?
Charles Barkley alluded to this when it pointed out years ago – It’s a new day, the Black man’s first thought is not – what are White people going to think or say about . . . anything under the sun. Truthfully, it never has, but we were forced to act like nobody in the room had a brain but Bobby O’leary
That’s it. Its no more complicated then that.
Mainstream America, what they think and what they say, especially in terms of crowning heroes and denouncing villains in our communities of color – carries very little weight with most people of color.
Mainstream USA’s views of who is the “good Black man” and who is “bad Black women” are today – inconsequential, constituting only . . . opposing opinions.
Opinions are like . . . , who doesn’t have one?
Can I say that in any other way? One man’s freedom fighter is another’s terrorist; My heroes . . . Crazy Horse, Nat Turner, Frederick Douglass, John Brown, Buffalo Soldiers, Sitting Bull, Booker T, WEB, Garvey, Jacj Johnson, and Black Dough Boys. Helen Keller, Tuskegee Airman, Jackie Robinson, Che, Patrice Lumumba, Martin and Malcolm, Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale, Ali, Tommy Smith and John Carlos . . . .
I attended a Ross Perot rally. Go figure?
Vick’s no monster who must be put to sleep, nor is Judge Sotamayor some racist Brown lady who can’t set her blind hate aside to judge who’s been good, and who’s been tyrannical and diabolical.
Here’s a reality check point — People of color don’t see this nation, nor the world in the same vein as always angry Euro-American males . It’s always been like that, dig these sharp and blunt words from the this nation’s first Black leader Fredrick Douglass, who said, almost two centuries ago.
Personallly, I think, having traveled beyond the shores of this country, this is the best form of civilization going at the moment, setting aside the means of it’s construction, and focusing on the end.
Yeah, the American concept is beautiful. The only problem is, there’s a segment of the population which just does not agree this country was made for everybody.
Instead they believe White land holding, titled men are the only ones really deserving of the American Dream. Lady Liberty, in the minds of most “conservative” folks, shouldn’t date Black, Brown, Yellow or Red men, and she better not bring home any colored lesbos. Her Uncle Sam said she’d better turn that cold shoulder and blind-eye to the rift-raft.
The people who are the base, who form the foundation of America . . . do not abide by the “all for one, one for all” rule. They are gladly not their brother’s keeper, unless he’s White, and the wealthier the brother . . . the better kept he’ll be.
So, the American people now know, the level of extreme dislike exist all though-out America. I don’t think from this point on, the Right in this nation can ever claim again race is a non-factor in our lives.
It’s painfully visible how uncomfortable “real” America is with a good, decent Black family in the White House. The melting pot is now a grease-splattering frying pan . . .
The heat in the Kitchen is getting a little too hot . . . I’m out.
