ESPN To Add More HBCU Football
BIRMINGHAM — ESPN has added a pair of October games to its 2009 SWAC television football schedule while confirming start times for several others.
ESPNU will televise the Saturday, Oct. 10th Mississippi Valley State at Alcorn State game and the Saturday, Oct. 31st Magic City Classic matchup between Alabama State and Alabama A&M.
Both games will air via tapeâ€delay at 9:30 p.m. CT.
Last season, Alcorn State posted its only conference victory with a 35â€21 win at Mississippi Valley State. This season’s game, set for a 4 p.m. kickoff, will be the home opener for the Braves, who will honor the late Steve McNair on that day and throughout the season.
Additional details will be announced at a later date.
The Magic City Classic will be televised for the second consecutive year in the matchup of Alabama rivals. Last season, Alabama A&M held on for a 17â€16 victory, its fourth straight win over the Hornets.
The game will kickoff at 2:30 p.m.
Several other kickoff times were announced Thursday as well. The Thursday, Oct. 1st matchup between Alcorn State and the Univ. Arkansasâ€Pine Bluff will kickoff at 6:30 p.m. at Golden Lion Stadium on the UAPB campus.
Also scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff is the Thursday, Oct. 22nd Western Division showdown between Prairie View A&M and Southern from SU’s A.W. Mumford Stadium.
The regular season finale between Southern and TexasSouthern on Saturday, Dec. 5th will kickoff at 1 p.m. in Houston at Delmar Stadium. All three games will betelevised live on ESPNU.
The 2009 SWAC Football Championship Game will be played Saturday, Dec. 12th at 1 p.m. and televised live on ESPN Classic.
Every SWAC team will make at least one appearance on national television this season. Currently 17 football games are scheduled to be televised regionally or nationally involving SWAC teams in 2009.
