SEATTLE — Congratulations goes out to a student a Samuel Morse Middle School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin! He was the first place winner of BASN’S NBA All-Star Essay Contest sponsored by Seagate.

This was his entry:

There are a number of players I look up to in the NBA, but my favorite All Star NBA player is Chris Paul. Not just because of his performance on the court but off the court as well. He helped so many people in New Orleans that suffered the disaster from Hurricane Katrina.

I also admire how he was able to overcome some of the obstacles that he was faced with as a teenager to become one of the greatest point guards in the National Basketball Association today.

One thing that just makes his story more interesting to me is that while he was in high school, his Grandfather was shot and killed in his driveway.

He was more than a grandfather to Chris; they were great friends and did a lot of things together. His Grandfather was an inspiration to him and someone that he looked up too.

After that horrible family situation occurred he wasn’t sure if he wanted to play in his next high school basketball game. Chris thought about it for awhile and then decided that he dedicate the game to his Grandfather.

He went out and scored score 61 points in his honor. The number 61 represented the age of his Grandfather when his life tragically came to an end.

After signing with Wake Forest and having a great college career he was the 1st draft pick of the New Orleans Hornets. The past few years, because of his play, Chris Paul’s name is always mentioned when it comes to voting for the NBA MVP honors. This season he had a steak of getting 106 steals.

If I ever met Chris Paul I would let him know that he’s one of my favorite players. He’s the one that I watch and try to pattern my game after. That is why I look up to Chris Paul, on and off the court.

Great Job!
