FSC COSTA RICA РJos̩ Ure̱a, President of the Federacion de Surf de Costa Rica (FSC), announced that thethird date of the Circuito Nacional de Surf DAYSTAR 2008-09 presented by Coca-Cola Zero (CNS) will take place this weekend in Playa Tamarindo.

Called Torneo Witch’s Rock, the 4-star tournament will begin Saturday and Sunday morning at 7 a.m. in front of Witch’s Rock Surf Camp. Winners in all the divisions will receive 1,500 points toward the CNS rankings, especially significant this year as the top surfers in the Open category are vying for a chance to be selected for the Costa Rica National Surf Team that will compete in the 2009 International Surfing Association (ISA) Billabong World Surfing Games Costa Rica 2009 in Hermosa this August.

Prior to this Tamarindo date of the CNS, Jaco’s Jason Torres is ranked at No. 1 in the Open division after he won the Torneo Coca-Colo Zero date in Playa Jaco last month.

Highly likely among the top surfers to win this weekend, he is one of the Tico surfers favored to earn the National title this year due to his excellent level, especially due to his international accomplishments.

The Central American and PanAmerican champion — as well as earning the recent fifth in the world ranking at the Portugal World Surfing Games — all gained by 20 years of age, have brought him to where he is now, pushing for his first Costa Rican national championship.

With the completion of the Torneo Witch’s Rock, the Circuito Nacional de Surf DAYSTAR 2008-09 will be halfway finished with its schedule this year, leaving only the five-star (2,000 points) of Copa Balance Natural Playa Nosara and Torneo Day & Night Playa Santa Teresa, and the six-star (2,500 points) Gran Final Terrazas Reef Playa Hermosa.

On the other hand, it will be this Tamarindo date and the fourth one in Nosara that will determine the next National selection of the Juniors (Less than 18 years of age) who will attend the World Games in Salinas, Ecuador between March 27 and April 5, 2009.

The Torneo Witch’s Rock is comes to Tamarindo for the second consecutive year, and a spot that is now one of the most important dates of the CNS because the town has a great surfing tradition.

According to, a swell is expected for both days of the competition, and Playa Tamarindo may undergo a strong surge of waves that could exceed five feet in height.

This is good news for the competitors, as a consequence will provide a high level of surfing as well as a great spectacle for all present on the beach. Last year, Puerto Viejo’s Gilbert Brown — the current Costa Rica Surfing Champion — won the Torneo Witch’s Rock, in a final that raged with Torres, Tamarindo’s own international superstar Federico Pilurzu, and Jaco’s Jairo Perez.

Pilurzu has confirmed his attendance at this year’s Torneo Witch’s Rock, and the two-time Central American Surf Champion, and frequent World Qualifying Surf circuit competitor, is also highly favored to grab the trophy of this third date.

Meanwhile, as the Federacion de Surf de Costa Rica (FSC) continues its preparations for the August ISA Billabong World Surfing Games Costa Rica 2009, the Director of the ISA, Stephanie Keith, will be in Costa Rica, Friday to meet with the Board of Directors of the FSC.

In addition, Keith will meet with the Costa Rica Institute of Tourism (ICT), Municipality and Chamber of Commerce of Jaco, the town near Hermosa.

Inscriptions for the Torneo Witch’s Rock will take place Friday at Witch’s Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo, between 5 and 7 p.m.
