HOUSTON — Cypress Ridge’s Russell Shepard was named the Houston Touchdown Club Offensive Player of the Year at their Annual High School Awards banquet held at the J.W. Marriott.

Shepard, a quarterback headed to LSU next spring, was the obvious choice for the prestigious award. As a junior last season, he showed people what he could do as a dual-threat with his feet; however this season he showed off his arm by passing for 1,843 yards and 20 touchdowns.

He was the Rams leading rusher this season with 1,946 yards and 28 touchdowns. His best performance of the 2008 season came in a 55-48 loss to Copperas Cove in the Class 5A-Division II Region II semifinals. Shepard threw for 227 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 311 yards and three scores.

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound senior is going to turn heads at LSU. He has drawn comparisons to current West Virginia University quarterback Pat White and he is considered the top quarterback of the high school class of 2009 by both and

He will graduate this month and start college a semester early. He will play in the 2009 Under Armour All-America game on January 4, 2009. Even though Shepard didn’t start playing quarterback until his sophomore year, he was heavily recruited by the Texas Longhorns, Florida, Michigan, and USC

His honors include: Named the 2008 All-Greater Houston TD Club Offensive Player of the Year; Selected to the 2008 All-Greater Houston Team by the Touchdown Club of Houston; First-team selection on Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Super Team;Named Houston Sports Performance Athletic Performer of the Week.

Shepard improved his passing game during the offseason with former NFL Pro Bowl quarterback Jeff Blake, who now lives in Austin. He met Blake, through his son, Emory, a prep standout receiver in Austin who’s committed to Texas Tech.

Blake taught Shepard footwork and how to find your rhythm. He also credits Blake at being the person who helped him to get to the point where he is now. With head coach Les Miles at the helm, it’s definite that the LSU Tigers are going to be a contender for the National Championship real soon!
