Heady Times For Williams and Johnson
HOUSTON — The Houston Texans made a lot of history last week, but nothing could be more special than the franchise’s first Pro Bowl duo since 2002.
Wide receiver Andre Johnson and defensive end Mario Williams are going bowling, Pro Bowling that is!
For Andre Johnson, this is his third trip. It’s something that he’s starting to get used too! The AFC leader in both catches (103) and receiving (1,408), posted a career day in a 13-12 victory over the Tennessee Titans with 11 catches for a personal-best 207 yards and a touchdown.
He has gained more than 100 yards seven times in 2008. “It’s a tremendous honor to be named one of the best in the league”, Johnson said. “But I think my mom enjoys going to Hawaii more than I do.”
The very quiet and humbled Johnson truly takes after his mother in the form of giving. The morning of the announcement he was spending $16,000 on a shopping spree for kids less fortunate at ToysRUs.
His mother, Karen Johnson was taking care of a similar task as she joined six other Texans players moms by personally shopping for a family in need. Mom was very excited to hear the announcement finally come through.
“I can’t wait to go back to Hawaii,” Karen Johnson stated. “It’s very exciting to be going back for a third time.”
For Mario Williams, his first trip will be very special. He finally gets to have the last laugh about why the Texans drafted him as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft.
Williams is everything that the Texans hoped he would be when they made him their first pick of the draft. He deserved the honor last season, but wasn’t chosen.
He had 14 sacks in 2007, compared to only 4.5 his rookie year. He has 11 entering Sunday’s game at Oakland. The news of his selection was very special because it came on his mother’s birthday.
“My mom is the first person I called,” Williams said. “I hope that I will be a great player one day. The sky’s the limit.” Just like Johnson’s mom, Williams mother was just as excited about the phone call.
“Mario deserves to go to the Pro Bowl,” Mary Williams stated. “I was ready to go to Hawaii even prior to the announcement. “When Mario didn’t get selected last year I told him that the Lord knows what he’s doing and in his time he would get it!”
