From the Press Box BASN NEW HAVEN, Ct.— While the top four spots in this week’s BoxToRow.com/BASN HBCU Top 10 Football Poll remained the same, the gap between No. 1 Tuskegee and No. 2 South Carolina State is now only separated by just two points.

As they’ve been all season, the unbeaten Golden Tigers (10-0) received 12 of 16 first-place votes (140 points) while the Bulldogs (9-2) got the other four with a total of 138 points.

SCSU clinched their first MEAC championship since 2004, and the school’s first outright conference title since 1994 in last week’s 32-0 shutout at Morgan State.

While Tuskegee is idle until their annual Turkey Day Classic battle with Alabama State on Thanksgiving Day, South Carolina State has a least two more games remaining. The Bulldogs travel to Greensboro, N.C. Saturday to meet North Carolina A&T in their final regular season game.

They’ll be returning to the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Div-1-AA) playoffs for the first time since 1982. Pairings will be announced on Sunday with games slated to begin on November 29th.

The rest of the top five includes Grambling State (8-2) at number three, Prairie View A&M (9-1) is fourth, and Bethune-Cookman (8-2) jumps up one spot from sixth to fifth.

On Thursday night, GSU looks to move one step closer to repeating as the SWAC’s Western Division champs when they travel to Houston’s Delmar Stadium to take on Texas Southern.

The game will be seen live on ESPNU at 8 p.m. ET.

Both teams are coming off an open date last week. GSU is on a seven-game winning streak and controls its own destiny as wins in their final two games would give them the West title.

Texas Southern will playing their final home game of the season.

The rest of the poll includes Tennessee State (8-3) who dropped from fifth to sixth, and Florida A&M (8-3) rose from ninth to seventh. Southern (6-4) and Albany State (7-4), who were both tied for seventh, are now eighth and ninth respectfully with CIAA champion Shaw (8-3) staying at No. 10.

Other key games this weekend are Tennessee State at Murray State and Bethune-Cookman meeting Florida A&M in the 29th Florida Classic at Orlando. The game will be shown live on ESPN Classic at 2 p.m. ET.

The Rattlers and Wildcats have split the last four meetings including BCC’s 34-7 win last year. FAMU leads the series 17-9, which includes a 7-3 mark when the Classic is played at Orlando.
