On The Road To Portugal
JAMAICA — Team Jamaica departed Thursday afternoon for the 2008 World Surfing Games which begin this weekend in Portugal.
The event, which begins Saturday through October 19th, will host over 40 countries being represented at the “Olympics” of the surfing world.
Jamaica’s team consists of four open men’s division surfers, Icah Wilmot, Luke Williams, Inilek Wilmot and Shane Simmonds. All are in top form. Icah is fresh off his second place finish at the 2008 Soup Bowl Pro in Barbados which gives him an overall sixth place ’08 Caribbean Ranking.
Luke, the ninth-ranked Caribbean surfer is in form and having a lot of success. Inilek with his second place showing at the 2008 Makka Pro, the No. 19 Caribbean surfer and Current National Championships points leader has been surfing extremely well.
17 year-old Shane Simmonds is fresh off his Makka Pro Junior win and is looking forward to his first showing for Jamaica in the open division.
“We were only able to send a four-member team this year”, sais Jamaican Surfing Association President Billy Wilmot. “Things are a bit tight financially for the Association, but we are sending our four top surfers who are all in peak condition.”
“We are expecting them to all produce personal best performances at these games and do Jamaica proud. Without a complete team, Jamaica will not be in contention for the team title as points from all divisions combine for the national total, but watch out for some spectacular surfing from our surfers, we expect them to upset many of their opponents.”
