Changes Aplenty Within BTRC/BASN Poll

From the Press Box BASN NEW HAVEN, Ct. — Following a weekend where five ranked teams were beaten, there is a bit of a shakeup within this week’s BoxToRow.com/BASN HBCU Top 10 Football Poll.

For the previous three weeks, the top five teams in the poll had remained unchanged. Last weekend’s action has slightly ended that streak. The top spot is still the same as the undefeated Golden Tigers of Tuskegee (8-0) are still the No. 1 team in black college football.

TU received 15 of 16 first-place votes with MEAC leading South Carolina State (6-2) garnering the other. The Bulldogs, third in this this week’s poll, are only one point behind second-ranked Grambling State (128 to 127).

Despite being idle last week, the Tigers (6-2) jumped from fifth to second in the latest poll. This weekend, GSU will jump back into SWAC play when they travel to Itta Bena to meet the Delta Devils of Mississippi Valley State.

The Bulldogs, who went from fourth to third, will be on the road this weekend as well. They’ll travel to Dover to meet the Hornets of Delaware State. The game, scheduled for a 1 p.m. ET start, will be seen on a tape-delayed basis on ESPNU Saturday night at 10:30 p.m. ET.

Prairie View A&M (7-1) and Hampton (5-2) round out the top half of the poll at four and five respectively. While the Panthers will be idle until they travel to Alabama A&M on November 8th, the Pirates will look to bounce back from their loss to S.C. State in a home battle against Winston-Salem State.

The rest of the top ten includes Tennessee State (6-2), who dropped from third to sixth; Florida A&M (6-2) remaining at No. 7; Morgan State (5-3) debuting the top 10 at No. 8, Southern (4-4) returning to the poll at No. 9, and Albany State (5-3) dropping a notch from ninth to tenth.

The Bears’ 20-3 win over Delaware State Saturday finally put MSU into the top ten for the first time this season after coming close several times previously. They’ll look to maintain their status this weekend when they travel to Tallahassee to meet the Rattlers from FAMU.

Other games of note this weekend include Tuskegee visiting Clark-Atlanta; Tennessee State hosting Tennessee Tech at Nashville; Southern hosting Arkansas-Pine Bluff; and Albany State meeting Fort Valley State in the 19th Fountain City Classic at Columbus, Ga.
