A Very American Coup By Michael – Louis Ingram, Editor-in-Chief...
Don’t Forget About The Ladies!!!
The USA women beat the Czech Republic 97-57 before President Bush, his family and many of the men’s team who were beseiged for autographs during the game.
The USA was down 13-2 when Diana Taurasi ignited a 20-4 run. She was hitting from all corners of the court and finished with 17 points.
She looked as good as she did in leading UConn to three national Championships.
The team, coached by Anne Donovan had very balanced scoring. Sylvia Fowles had 16 points on 8-of-10 shooting to go with her 14 rebounds. Former Rutgers star Cappie Pondexter had 12, including a key three at the end of the first half.
Candace Parker played a game-high 23 minutes. All-Star Tamika Catchings was limited by injuries which have surrounded her all season. Point guard Sue Bird did not score much but was very efficient in distributing the ball.
The USA is a co-favorite to win the Gold along with Australia. Both teams are led by many WNBA stars and teammates. The USA next plays China. They fell to them 67-64 in April but only had a few members of their team present for that game.
China was at full strength in the game, which was also played in Beijing, and they dominated on the boards. The USA now has Lisa Leslie, Parker and Fowles up front and a decidedly healthier Catchings as each day passes.
