A Few Minutes With Actress Keke Palmer
Ice Cube and Tasha Smith, who played recently in “Why Did I Get Married?”, co-star with Palmer playing as her uncle Curtis Plummer and her mother Claire.
“The Longshots” is a family-fun film that will be enjoyable by all. When Curtis Plummer (Ice Cube), a down on his luck former high school football star, takes the only job he can find-babysitting his misfit niece Jasmine Plummer (Palmer), he discovers that she has the skills that once made him a great quarterback.
The only place the two opposites get along is on the field, so Curtis is determined to turn Jasmine into the star of the local team, The Minden Browns, and get his own stride back by becoming the coach.
At first, the boys on the team don’t want her but when the new quarterback shows them she’s got the skills, she turns their world upside down.
The movie is based on a true-story about an 11-year old petite girl named Jasmine Plummer, who grew up playing football with her uncle on the streets of her hometown of Harvey, Illnois.
Her uncle, Fred Johnson was coaching a local Pop Warner team at the time. She played several positions to start, including linebacker and tackle. She had a powerful arm that could throw the football 65 yards.
Everyone thought it was cute to have a girl on the football team until she advanced to the national level and people saw that she could really play football.
Plummer, who’s currently 15 and in the ninth grade, enjoys playing basketball, wrestling, and running track. She loves football, but right now she’s the starting point guard on the varsity basketball team, and she hopes to to in the WNBA one day.
Written by Nick Santora, an L.A.-based screenwriter who was the only one that was sincere about telling the story. “The Longshots” brought Ice Cube and Palmer back together again.
A rising star on the Hollywood scene as a singer and actress, Palmer credits Ice Cube with giving her first movie role. Her first acting job came when she played Queen Latifah’s niece in the 2004 sequel “Barbershop 2″, which Cube starred in and executive produced.
Her last movie was playing the lead role in “Akeelah and the Bee” with Lawrence Fishburne and Angela Bassett. Here’s a closer look at Keke Palmer and what it’s like being such a young star:
