ABA To Expand To Georgia
INDIANAPOLIS — The American Basketball Association has announced that the league as added a team in the great city of Savannah, Ga. for the upcoming season, and according to Joe Newman, ABA CEO, “we couldn’t be more delighted to be there and to have the ownership group that will be representing the city, the team and the ABA.”
“I’ve been working with the Williams brothers for a couple of years; they are very nice young men, very experienced and bring a lot of energy, character and business acumen to the league. Plus, it really fits beautifully into our Southeast divisional plans.”
The team will be co-owned by Levi Williams and brother Mark. Natives of Atlantic City, N.J., but most recently from Sebring, Florida, “This is something we have wanted for quite sometime,” stated Levi. “We have been looking for the exact right situation, and the city and timing are perfect. We are excited.”
Levi is a 2003 graduate of Savannah State University where he received a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was a four year letterman with the men’s basketball program, servicing as co-captain in his junior and senior seasons.He has spent the last five years of his professional life as a basketball coach at both the high school and collegiate levels.
He and his wife LaToya, who earned a degree in Public and Cultural Communications from the University of South Florida, are co-founders of The Paramount Sports Academy, an organization focused on the promotion of amateur athletics. Through Paramount Sports Academy, they have offered individual training and basketball camps and clinics for local youth. The couple and their daughter Kennedy currently reside in the Atlanta, Georgia area.
Mark Williams graduated from the prestigious IMG Prep Academy in 2003. He first signed with the University of Akron before transferring to Savannah State University where in his freshman season he finished third in the nation among freshman in scoring with an average of 18.7.
He has recently started a clothing apparel company known as The Marq Eduard Clothing Company (www.marqeduard.com) and is completing a political science degree at Clayton State University. He also resides in the Atlanta, Georgia area.
“Not only am I excited about working with Levi on the ownership of this team, but I am getting into playing shape and plan to play also…how’s that for an interesting combination,” added Mark.
