” SORRY GOTTA GO GOTTA GO ”

If only everyone knew

when to call it

Quits

especially in Sports.

Even in the face of lots of pleas for him not to do so, which would be more than enough to persuade many, Jaguars wide receiver Jimmy Smith at 37 has made his decision Final. NO. NO he will not play another season. After 12 years in the NFL he said enough.

Make no mistake Smith was and is a player of Substance. Distinction. Who could play on. He is 7th on the All Time NFL Receiver list with 862 career receptions. And 11th All Time in receiving yards with 12, 287 yards. He is a 5 time All Pro choice. Last season at 36 Jimmy Smith certainly continued to prove himself as Jacksonville’s most productive receiver with 70 receptions for 1023 yards and 6 Touchdowns. He likely have done the same in 2006.

But he has said

NO More

Maybe understanding what he has been through will make his good sense apparent. In one year 2001 Smith underwent 3 abdominal operations. The same year he was arrested for drunken driving and separately cocaine use was detected during a test. Later he was suspended 4 games for confirmed drug use.

Going all the way back to 1992 Smith broke his leg and missed the majority of his first season in the NFL. The next year he underwent an emergency appendectomy and a series of post operation infections and setbacks. And he missed that entire season. Soon after he was cut from the Dallas roster than Philadelphia’s.

Still he battled on

Catching a break with the brand new Jags in 1995 who offered him a try out when most everyone assumed his very brief troubled career was all but over leaving him barely able to say he had played in the NFL, with a Straight Face. Fortunately he clicked indeed with new Jacksonville franchise and coach Tom Coughlin. It was the real start of a Distinguished Career.

Also a hint of why

Jimmy Smith may have developed a very sanguine view of the meaning of sports in his life and became immune to the Siren Call of “just one more season.” What we really have in Smith’s decision is yet another opportunity to see how high the Bullshit in the NFL remains.

Someone so outstanding at his position, appearing so loved even Adored by Jacksonville management that they delayed his retirement announcement in the futile hope yes just maybe he might wake up and change his mind and overjoy them saying YES I’ll play “one more season.” Even at 37 ! When most Receivers have already been told to throw in the Team Towel.

Jimmy Smith did not

succumb to the Seduction

At the Same Time

Doesn’t it seem perfectly Logical that a team so enamored of such an outstanding player who did so much for them will be instantly offered an assistant coaching position, or a place in the front office, or an announcing slot on Jaguar broadcasts. Jimmy Smith the LAST of the original Jaguar team still playing for them ……

There must be a place for

Jimmy Smith

ANYTHING

to keep Smith “producing”

for the Jags and

the good people of

Jacksonville

EXCEPT

no such

Announcement

so Far ????
