Circuito Nacional de Surf Resumes in Playa Nosara
COSTA RICA — José Ureña, President of the Federacion de Surf de Costa Rica (FSC), announced that the fourth date of the 2007-08 Circuito Nacional de Surf (CNS) will take place this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, in Playa Nosara.
Called Torneo Banco Nacional, the 4-star tournament will begin each morning at 7:00 a.m. at Playa Guiones and will award the winner of each category 1,500 points.
After winning two consecutive crowns of the CNS, Gilbert Brown of Puerto Viejo will look to hold fast to his lead and edge closer to taking the national championship when he enters the water in Guiones. With the tournaments coming to the half-way mark, Brown’s momentum is enough to think that he might just be able to claim the season.
If so, he would add this to his 2001-02 Costa Rican National Surf Championship title, and equal the record carried by Jaco’s Alvaro Solano, who has two national championships under his belt: Solano was 2003-04 and 2004-04 CNS National Champion.
Another point very important to take into account for this weekend at the Torneo Banco Nacional will be the participation of the Pan-American Junior champion, Jason Torres (Jaco), a surfer who follows Brown closely in ranking.
In the past year, Torres has gained in experience, is highly favored for this Nosara date, and only a little less than 500 points from Brown, while Jairo Pérez (Jaco), is more than 700 away.
In the Women’s category, there is once again some uncertainty as to who will play a better role in the water at the Torneo Banco Nacional. So far this season, neither Lisbeth Vindas nor Nataly Bernold (both from Jaco) have pulled hard away from the pack, and Bernold — the current National Women’s Champion, has not managed to win a single contest.
Last year in Nosara, however, she won the trophy. These two, nevertheless, both maintain solid performances and are already selected for the upcoming Central American Surf Championships in Playa Venao, Panama on March 21, 22, 23. The Tico Team will be defending its trophy, which Costa Rica has won each year the Central American Surf Championships have been in existence. Ericka Valverde of Dominical, by the way, is No. 3 in the CNS rankings.
It’s all about Pérez in the Junior division, since he has won the category in all three dates of the Circuito so far this year. Jairo is posed to win his second consecutive national Junior championship, an honor no surfer has ever obtained. Without question, he will be surfing for Costa Rica at the Central American Surf Championships, helping to defend their title in Panama.
For the Torneo Banco Nacional, over 300 surfers are expected to register for the competition, since Nosara is a high quality wave and the tournament is a favorite spot each year. Inscriptions for the Torneo Banco Nacional will take place Friday at Harbor Reef Hotel between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m.
Costs are c6000 for Open, Women’s Longboard, Bodyboaders and Masters, and c5,000 for Boys, Juniors, Junior Women’s, Grommets, Mini-Grommets and Novices. Additionally, first-time registrants must pay an annual FSC membership fee of c10,000.
Once again, the 2007-08 Circuito Nacional de Surf will offer spectators an added visual treat before the surf trophies on Sunday, at approximately 3:00 p.m. with the Miss Organic & Nature contest.
Each winner receives $100 and a chance to earn the overall title — and $1,000 — at the Reef Gran Finals in April. So far, the winners have been, Alexandra Vasquez, Kimberly Bondurant, Guadalupe SolÃs, Michelle Arias, Jetsi Hernández and Marion Leroy.
