Mayweather, Lacy and Tarver

IOWA CITY, Ia. — Floyd Mayweather showed Saturday night why he may be this generation’s best fighter. He defeated a game but tough opponent in Ricky Hatton and did so in spectacular fashion.

As ESPN’s Ted Atlas noted, Mayweather often beat Hatton at Hatton’s game, not just beating him on the outside but on the inside as well. Hatton tried to bully Mayweather and had some early success but Mayweather quick hands proved decisive.

For every one of Hatton’s clean punches, Mayweather connected on almost three punches. His accuracy and power showed their effect in the later rounds as he shook Hatton up before dispatching him.

Twice Maywaether knocked Hatton down and the fight was stopped in the 10th. He talked retirement after the fight, but often great fighters talk that way when they reached their pinnacle and see now new worlds to conquer. Most great fighters often find that one more fight and Mayweather will find his.

Miguel Cotto, anyone?

Cotto’s recent fights showed that maybe he may be Mayweather best challenge and certainly a Cotto-Mayweather fight will generate even more PPV dollars than the Hatton-Mayweather battle.

As for Mayweather, he will continue to develop his own promotional company as he follows in the footsteps of Oscar De La Hoya.

Mayweather, like other superstars, are trying to get control over his career. The bottom line for Mayweather is that like other great fighters, he showed that he can beat any fighters and any styles.

Look for Cotto-Mayweather in 2008.

Meanwhile, Jeff Lacy threw a right hand in the fourth round and took control of his bout against Peter Manfredo, Jr. Manfredo, a former Contender star, used his quick hands to befuddle Lacy but after a right sent Manfredo down, he fought a more defensive fight and this allowed Lacy to persevere.

The way is open for a Lacy-Tarver bout. Lacy has been in boxing purgatory after his one-sided loss to Joe Calzaghe and recovery from a shoulder injury but now his comeback is leading toward a big money fight with Tarver and a possible title shot in the light heavyweight division.

As for Tarver, his most recent one-sided victory over Daniel Santiago, who was last seen leaving the recent Contender series because he was severely over weight.

Santiago has now lost to both Tarver and Zsolt Erdei over the past year along with short one week Contender gig, hardly had a great year. Tarver is now 39 and now going for his one last chance for a championship and regain some of the luster that he lost in recent one sided defeat to Bernard Hopkins.

Last week, Vernon Forest continued his own comeback as he defeated Michele Piccirillo in his last bout. Like Lacy, Forest has been resurrecting his career while overcoming injuries and his loss to Ricardo Mayorga.

Forest wants a third meeting with Mayorga to exercise his own demons. Mayorga is responsible for Forest’s only two losses and now Forest wants his revenge against the man who sent his career in a temporary down slide.
